JOHN FRANCIS CARROLL IV

JOHN CARROLL Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Mar. 10 to Mar. 12, 2012.
CARROLL, John Francis IV, age 44, was welcomed into the arms of His God and Father on Thursday, March 8, 2012. A devoted husband and father, John was committed to living daily for Jesus Christ; his wife, Maria; his children, Hallie, Hannah, Meg and Jack; his law students at the University of Richmond; and his law practice at Spotts Fain; his insatiable love of learning, his powerful intellect, his gifted ability to communicate, and his servant's heart for leadership will always be treasured. His sense of humor and love of people made everyone feel valuable and at ease. He impacted many lives with the love of God. He has been a gift. John was born August 22, 1967 in Hackensack, New Jersey, the son of John "Jack" F. Carroll III and Dolores "Dolly" K. Carroll. They moved to Virginia where he attended Chesterfield County schools and graduated from Midlothian High School (class 1985). He then went to Virginia Tech (B.S., Mechanical Engineering 1989) and after graduation, married his high school sweetheart, Maria Reynolds. Intrigued by combining his love of science and the law, he attended the University of Richmond (J.D. 1995). His career in law took him to Clark and Stant in Norfolk, Virginia, and then on for an additional law degree at New York University (LL.M. 1999). Following his NYU degree, he moved his family back to Richmond, where he had a nine-year career as Assistant General Counsel at Hamilton Beach Brands, Inc. To his delight, he was given the opportunity to teach full-time at the University of Richmond's law school as an Associate Clinical Professor of Law and Director of IP & Transactional Law Clinic in 2009. He also worked as counsel at Spotts Fain PC on a part-time basis. He is the grandson of the late Lester H. and Rena Kirkpatrick; and John F. and Ruth Carroll Jr. He is survived by his wife, Maria Reynolds Carroll; his daughters, Hallie Grace, Hannah Marie, Margaret Elizabeth; and his son, John Allen Kirkpatrick Carroll; also his parents, John "Jack" F. Carroll III and Dolores "Dolly" K. Carroll; his sisters, Mary Kate Hester and husband, Ben, and Stephanie Bowe and husband, Brian, and their children, Noah, Lily and Lindsey Hester; and Emily, Katie and Caroline Bowe. He is the nephew of Dr. Barry Kirkpatrick and wife, Marilyn, Stephen Carroll and wife, Susan, of Siesta Key, Fla.; David Carroll and wife, Gail, of Bethany, Conn., the late Susannah Fahy and husband, George, and Katherine May and husband, Bruce; and a host of cousins and relatives on both sides. Services will be held on Sunday, March 11. The family is receiving guests 3 to 4:30 p.m., followed by a Time of Sharing and Thanksgiving for John's life. On Monday, March 12, there will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. All services will be held at Swift Creek Baptist Church, 7511 North Spring Run Rd., Midlothian. The graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. at Westhampton Memorial Park, 10000 Patterson Ave.

It is now months after John's departure. Having sat in the office across from John at Spotts Fain, I was his last stop before leaving the office. He would sit for a minute or two, and the glow of his energy, his love of life, and his love of every human being simply washed over me. Time and time again. He never failed to stop for our little chat. Maybe that is why John Carroll will not leave me. Both my parents have departed. Strangely, John Carroll's death is the only one I cannot release.

It was a wonderful evening of praise last night. Hearing the testimony of how God has been faithful and tender toward you, Maria and the children, is a true testimony of God's mercy and John's spiritual investment in his family. Without that leader in your home who lead your heart's and mind's toward the Savior, the journey would be much more difficult. John delivered you into the Lord's capable hands and I know he is so proud to see how you have stayed in the race, weary and tired but allowing God to use his own to lift you up. We are blessed to be a part of this journey with you. Thank you for your words of encouragement and your testimony of faith.

We love you, Terese

Well it still seems like just yesterday we got the phone call saying John has passed away. Hearing those words broke me down.It feels like we all were just dealing with my Papa passing away.. Hard enough as that was knowing another family member passed away was awful news. I loved John. His smile lit up the room and his kindness was out of this world. He was the first one to come and talk to me after i got baptized. John was just truly an amazing guy. We all know where he is. He with the Lord having the time of his life. I know he is with my papa right now and i cant wait to see them again one day. Hearing you (Maria) speak tonight made me want to come here and just write. I love you all, and you guys are still in my thoughts.

Dear Maria and family,

I knew John as one of my first law students. He was bright, engaged, and sociable, everything that you want in a student. Just last year, I returned to the law school to film a dance for my non-profit, CancerDancer. What I will remember most from that day was being approached by John and having a wonderful and very emotional conversation about the path of life. He also volunteered his time and expertise to CancerDancer. What a wonderful man. I am so sorry for your loss, but know that he touched many more people than even you know.

Dear Carroll Family,
John was a neighbor on Winding Way who played with my 2 boys. They shared many a PB and J. I am shocked to read of his passing. May he be at peace with the Lord.

Dear Maria and family,
My prayers have been with you constantly since I heard of John's transfer from earth to heaven. He lived well and was an inspiration in life and death. May God comfort you every day and clothe you with His peace, wisdom and grace so you all continue to stand steadfast and immovable.

March 18, 2012

May the Gof of all comfort support your dear family at this time.

Dear Carroll Family,
I remember John from our days at Bon Air Elementary School and the many years we spent the summers swimming together for the Bon Air Blue Streaks. Considering what an "Iron Man" John was in those days it is hard to fathom that he would pass so soon. Who could explain such a thing, it must be the Lord's doing. It must be said that even as a young man John's spirit, sense of honor, and basic goodness were already an indelible part of his character. John will be well remembered by all who knew him. God bless you and keep you during this difficult time.

Dear Hallie,
No words are adequate to describe the sadness I feel at the loss of your dad. You reminded me so much of him, each week in Sunday School, for you were the "Great Debator", a lawyer in the making. May you, your mom, Hannah, Meg, and Jack find strength, hope, and peace that only Christ can provide.

March 14, 2012

We will forever cherish the memories of the time you lived across the street from us on Staten Island while John was attending NYU. The entire Carroll family was, and still is a treasure. Our hearts are heavy and we are deeply saddened yet can't imagine your grief. Perhaps the Psalmist understood when he wrote, “So my spirit grows faint within me; my heart within me is dismayed. I spread out my hands to You; my soul thirsts for You like a parched land. Answer me quickly, O LORD; my spirit fails. Do not hide Your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit. Let the morning bring me word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul.”~ Psalm 143:4, 6-8. John reflected the glory of God with such intelligence, charm and warmth that he is certain to be deeply missed and is absolutely irreplaceable. We celebrate a life well lived and trust that God will miraculously heal the pain of loss in His time. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort.

Maria, Hannah, Hallie, Meg, and Jack:

We have been praying for you all non-stop since we heard about John going to heaven. While here with us on earth, he was for us a pillar, an encourager, a brother, a teacher, and a beacon always pointing to Jesus. Now that he is with our Father, he will continue to be all that and more. We pray that He hastens the day when our faith will become sight and we will be together again. We love you all dearly.

John is a very good person. I had occassion to know John through one legal matter that he handled on a pro bono basis against me. Although I attended law school with John as well, I did not get to know him as intimately as most who are leaving messages. Based on my limited interaction with John, however, it was apparent that he lived life in a way that enriched the lives of many. I am sorry to hear of your loss, but rest assured that he touched the lives of many in a very positive way.

Your family is in our prayers. My parents (Joyce & Alfred Lewis) own a place on Bavon Beach. My youngest son, Brandon, was so excited when John started holding church on the beach years ago. He would make sure we were all ready and would help carry the chairs down the beach. I will never forget these memories. Brandon was killed in a car accident last May. It is such a comfort to know that Brandon and John are now walking the streets of gold in Heaven. May God Bless you and send you the peace and comfort you need. Love, Connie & Chip Armstrong

We would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the Carroll and the Reynolds family and to express to the children, "Your father was a man of faith who loved GOD so much and he showed this with the light he carried inside him and then showing that light and doing for others everyday without expecting anything in return." "Your daddy will be missed by each one of you, and mommy too, but remember daddy will always be that light within each of you and now daddy can watch over you with three spirits to guide you throughout your life.. GOD, the Lord and Daddy."
John was a spiritually devout Christian, for when I meet him he always left from sporting events he participated in to be home for Bible study on time.
Gentle man of GOD, family and friends with such a Spiritual Heart of Faith.
John, surely you have been welcomed home with arms wide open through the Gates into Heaven. Welcome.

Dear Maria and family,
Words cannot express the sadness our hearts feel in hearing of your loss. John had an impact on everyone who knew him. His love for the Lord shone through everything he did. We pray that the Lord will sustain you in your grief. You are dearly loved.
In Christ,
Christine, Scott, and Zachary
