GREENSBORO - Mr. John Boyd Clapp, 91, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 24, 2012.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 29 at Alamance Presbyterian Church with Rev. Michael Barrett and Rev. Carl Parsons officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Clapp was born on October 29, 1920 to the late Perry C. and Lena Coble Clapp. He graduated from Alamance High School and Elon College. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Lieutenant in the Pacific Theater during the invasion of Guam. He began his career as a CPA with Peat, Marwick and Mitchell Accounting Firm where he rose to the level of Senior Accountant. From 1953 to 1978 he worked for Greensboro News & Record where he was Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer. Later, he and two colleagues established "The Greensboro ADventure", which was eventually sold to Greensboro News & Record.

Mr. Clapp was a member of Alamance Presbyterian Church for nearly 70 years where he served as an Elder and held the positions of Chairman of Board of Deacons, Board of Trustees and Cemetery Policy Committee. He was a member of the Greensboro Jaycees where he served as secretary and treasurer; Alamance Lion's Club where he was "Distinguished Man of the Year"; Guilford County School Board; Treasurer of Institute of Newspaper Controllers & Finance Officers; a member of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and numerous other organizations.

Mr. Clapp was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Ruth Jobe Clapp; his son, Thomas H. Clapp; and sister, Edna Martin.

He is survived by his two daughters, Betsy Clapp Peacock and Carolyn Clapp Whitley; daughter-in-law, Barbara Y. Clapp; grandchildren, Bryan Whitley and wife Lydia, Jonathan Whitley and wife Amy, Matthew Whitley, Jeffrey Peacock and wife Shannon, Meredith Clapp Perlman and husband Ben, Allison Clapp Marth and husband David; great grandchildren, Lillian and Landon Peacock, Kaitlyn Whitley, Leah Marth; sisters, Trudy Peacock, Mary Belle Tuttle and husband Neal.

Special thanks to Clapp's Nursing Center and especially Aimee Heath for their tender and loving care of Mr. Clapp over the last few years.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28 at Forbis & Dick Pleasant Garden Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Alamance Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund or Pleasant Garden Baptist Church.
