I was very fortunate to meet Dr. Clements when I was a postdoctoral fellow at UCSF in the 1980s. He was such a gentleman and scholar! Very humble. Pulmonary surfactant was a monumental discovery! The current estimate is that over 4-million lives have been saved as a result. What a joy it was to have known and learned from him.

As I read Dr. John A. Clements´ obituary, the word surfactant nearly jumped off the page. It´s the word I heard repeatedly during the two months that my granddaughter, Elizabeth (Lizzy), lived in the NICU. She was born two and a half months prematurely and was a fragile surviving twin. When I was finally able to hold her, Lizzy´s tiny body fit in the palm of my hand.
My family and countless others owe enormous gratitude to Dr. Clements´ for his curiosity and determination. May God bless him!
Lizzy, now 22, recently graduated from college Magna Cum Laude with two degrees. She suffers none of the "preemie" related issues that we were cautioned about. Currently working as a para-professional with special needs children, she will soon have her license to teach middle school.
I will forever hold Dr. Clements in my heart.
