John DeFilippo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 11, 2025.
John V. "Jack" DeFilippo, 78, passed away in the early morning of January 17, 2025, in Willoughby, Ohio. He was born on September 10, 1946, and spent his life in Northeast Ohio.

Jack was the son of John Otto and Anne DeFilippo and was preceded in death by his brother, Paul. He is survived by his sister, Annette; his five children, Dawn, John, Paul, Daniel, and Vanessa; his many grandchildren; and his former wife and best friend, Darlene (Furman) DeFilippo, who was devoted to his care in his final days.

Jack was a man of quiet strength and sharp wit. He loved his coffee, a good book, and never quite fully inhaled his cigarettes. Mornings often found him at the kitchen table with a newspaper or a James Patterson novel, savoring moments of peace before work. A passionate golfer, he eagerly shared the game with others, especially his children. Summers were spent on the course, where he not only taught the sport but also fostered deep connections-on the fairway, he treated his children as equals and friends. He also had a deep love for baseball and football and remained a steadfast Browns fan through every season.

Over the years, Jack worked in various roles-running a gas station with his brother before he could legally drive, managing a shoe store in Ashtabula, overseeing factory work at TRW (where he lost a pinky but not his spirit), and finally retiring from Giant Eagle as a beloved fixture of the Willoughby Commons store.

Jack will be remembered for his humor, keen conversation skills, and unwavering spirit. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Simply put, Jack was the man. Worked with him for 15 years and am lucky to have called him a friend.

Jack made working at Giant Eagle so much fun. I constantly laughed when he was there. I miss and will continue to miss him. He was such a great guy. Almost every week I remember something he did or said at work and I laugh. I'll never forget him.
