John Jude Devine, a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away suddenly on June 20, 2023, at the age of 66.
Born on January 19, 1957, in Co. Derry, Ireland, John was the son of the late Joseph and Peggy Devine. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sally; their children, Joseph Devine and Caitlin Devine Masserano (Jonathan); and cherished grandson and namesake Declan John Masserano. John will also be fondly remembered by his siblings, Margaret McGettigan, Seamus Devine, Gerard Devine, and Joanne Devine, his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews.
John was the eldest of five children and grew up in Claudy, Derry. You would frequently find him helping his father on their farm, tending to sheep and cows and taking care of the land. The dedicated stewardship of his home was a constant in John's life. John cared deeply for his parents, siblings, aunts, and uncles and treasured every moment with them. A piece of his heart always remained at Home in Ireland and he stayed connected with regular visits, phone calls, and keeping up to date with Irish news.
After university, John set off from his homeland to explore new opportunities in the United States. Just two months in-fittingly at an Irish pub in Philadelphia-he met his perfect match, the love of his life, Sally Burke. Their love story, one for the ages, included 38 beautiful years of marriage sharing amazing travels and adventures.
Their greatest shared adventure was being devoted parents to their two children, Joe and Caitlin. They put all they had into raising their family. From soccer games to Irish dancing competitions, John never missed a moment of his children's lives. He was the ultimate cheerleader, coach, and shoulder to cry on. Through his hard work and example, he provided and guided his children through the best education possible. Nothing made John happier than seeing his family of proud Hoyas thrive.
A devout Catholic, John's faith was unwavering and a beacon for all those who knew him. He could often be seen as an usher at SS. Philip and James Church and would always be willing to serve when called on. He had a particular devotion to St. Jude, his patron saint.
John studied construction management at Leeds Polytechnic and went on to have a successful career as a senior construction project manager. Known for his exceptionally strong work ethic, skilled industry knowledge, and honest and warm relationships, John was highly respected by his colleagues and took great pride in his work.
Health and fitness were important aspects of John's life, and he dedicated time each day to staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. He enjoyed cycling down the Chester Valley Trail and walking with Sally through the neighborhoods of Exton. John's commitment to physical well-being was an inspiration to those around him and ultimately allowed him to touch the lives of multiple families through organ donation, a gift that will provide hope and life for others.
John was strong yet gentle, disciplined yet gracious, funny yet tender, proactive yet patient. He kept connected with his family and friends and wanted the best for everyone he met. He humbly embodied the best qualities of what servant leaders strive for, and we are confident that his ears would be burning reading this. His legacy of kindness, strength, and faithfulness will never be forgotten.
May John rest in peace, knowing that his life was one of purpose, love, and service to others. He will be dearly missed, but John's memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to have known him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances can be made in the form of contributions to the Catholic Charities Appeal to support local social services and the charitable work of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
