John Dizek

John Dizek, 68, died Tuesday evening at his daughter's Jefferson Twp. home after a long and courageous battle with illness. His wife of 34 years of marriage, Lucy Weber Dizek, survives.

Born Sept. 25, 1948, and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Anthony and Nancy Leanza Dizek. An extraordinary talent from his youth and an accomplished musician, John was a founding member, songwriter and lead vocalist of the Hassles in 1964. They were signed by United Artist Records shortly after. Making a Billboard chart appearance in 1967 was their single "You've Got Me Hummin'."

Settling in Northeast Pa., John served as the music teacher at Scranton Area Christian Academy as well as offering private musical lessons for many years. He also served as an accomplished worship leader and pianist in churches around the area including: Dickson City, Trinity and Peckville assemblies of God and Our Father's House of NEPA. A talented woodworker, he was the owner of Woodland Hardwood Flooring in Hop Bottom. Throughout his years, he impacted countless lives through both his caring and nurturing ways as well as through his music. John was a dedicated family man and a devoted Christian. In his later years he played with the Al and John Duo, bringing joy to many in the area.

He is also survived by his adoring daughter, Jessica Dizek, Jefferson Twp.; sister, Joanne Dizek and wife, Bonnie Jennings, Nicholson; and was a loving "boopa" to granddaughter, Alexandra Dizek.

His family would like to extend their appreciation to all of John's amazing and supportive friends, including Al, Adam, John R. and Pastor Dave, just to name a few, as well as the entire staff of VNA Home Hospice, who provided comfort to both John and his family during his final days.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 7 p.m. in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge, by John's dear friend, Pastor David Daley.
