I am sorry for your loss. I have many memories and only wish now there were more. God be with you in your time of grief.

Remembering My Friend John Dooley

I awoke this morning in tears thinking that I can no longer email or call my best friend John. When the world lost Mother Terressa, I was not too concerned as John was here – but now that John has left us I am concerned. I’ve known people of integrity and honesty, but John stood alone and included a major helping of care and concern for his friends as well as the shirt off his back. Where will the world be without John? Who will take his place? I will now have to talk to St. John using a different kind of email.



For myself, I’ve been lucky to have had a wonderful life, but when things went bad last year I was visited by depression. My friend John often called and offered to visit and told me he was concerned for my well-being – thank you John – you made a difference not only in my world, but in many other worlds. We had plans to meet in Nevada this year to search for rare earths with another wonderful friend Tom Mitko. The trip will seem so lonely without him.



When did I first meet John? I met John in college. Was it 1972? I was a grad student and John was an undergrad. We befriended one another over coffee (me) and tea (John) in the Huddle coffee shop, and sealed our friendship for all time. I suspect that when my time comes, John will be waiting at the Pearly Gates with a rock hammer in one hand and a map in the other with a field trip planned to search for heaven’s treasures.



I’ll never forget the day that John met my father. They already knew one another! John later explained that he had met my dad at an earlier age – my dad was a cop. We both had a good laugh – John had many interesting experiences in life.



John was a person of such honesty that I believe when Moses laid down the laws of morals and ethics – they were intended for all others as these were already built into his soul. For those of you who did not know John as well as I did, you missed one wonderful person – the likes that comes along only once in a lifetime.



John was my surrogate father, brother, bartender, therapist and priest, but most of all he was a lifelong friend who I will never forget. So long John, till we meet again.
