John Dutton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 12, 2022.
OBITUARY OF JOHN A. DUTTON, LT. COL., USAF, RET.

John A. Dutton (89) passed away on August 18, 2022. Born in Quincy, MA on March 1, 1933, he was the oldest of six children of Warren and Esther Dutton who pre-deceased him. His brother, Warren Jr., passed away on May 28, 2006, and sister Marion Seckendorf, on July 15, 2010. His remaining siblings are Eleanor Lombardo, Mary Esther Dutton, and James Dutton who all live in New England. John graduated from Colby College, Waterville, ME in 1955 and received a BA in Geology and a commission in the U.S. Air Force. He completed basic pilot training in 1956 and became an instructor pilot at Goodfellow AFB, TX. In 1960, he was assigned to Mather AFB, CA and married the former Jane Gilchrist of Sacramento, CA in 1961. John always felt that Jane was the "wind beneath his wings" throughout his Air Force career of 26 years and in retirement after 1980 . By then he had flown over 8000 hours primarily as an instructor pilot and flight examiner. During the 1960s, John and Jane became parents to John, Jr., William, and Julie Dutton. In later years, they became grandparents to one grandson, Steven, and three granddaughters, Elizabeth, Heather, and Bonnie. In 1967, he graduated from the Ohio State University with an MS in Geodetic Science. Later assignments included Korea and Vietnam. A further assignment took him to the Pentagon where he was the project officer for the Air Force's aerial mapping program and other classified programs. During his four years at the Pentagon, he was promoted to Lt. Colonel. In 1975, John was assigned as Commander of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps unit at Duke University, Durham, NC. He returned to flying in 1979 and became a C-130E aircraft commander, assigned to Pope AFB, NC. John retired in 1980 and returned to Duke where he held positions in Athletics and the Dept. of Electrical Engineering. Upon full retirement from Duke in 1989, John and Jane returned to Sacramento. He then became active in health care counseling and voluntary tax preparation for the elderly for 13 years. John and Jane loved to garden, travel and research genealogy together. Longtime associations were with the Masons, Shriners, Daedalions and Colby College athletics. His hobbies included flight simulation, computers, genealogy, and photography. Services will be private with burial in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans.

JOHN DUTTON, MY GOOD FRIEND

JOHN AND I BEGAN OUR LONG AND VALUED FRIENDSHIP BY SENDING LETTERS TO EACH OTHER DURING THE SUMMER BEFORE BEC0MNG COLBY FRESHMEN ROOMMATES IN SEPTEMBER 1951. WE ENJOYED THAT YEAR IN AVERILL HALL, JOHN PREPARING FOR A MAJOR IN GEOLOGY AND I IN HIST0RY, GOVERNMENT AND ECONOMICS. JOHN STARRED IN FOOTBALL AND I PLAYED BASEBALL. JOHN PLEDGED T0 THE ALPHA TAU OMEGA FRATERNITY AND I TO LAMBDA CHI ALPHA. DURING OUR UPPERCLASS YEARS WE SAW EACH OTHER OFTEN, ESPECIALLY AT AIR FORCE ROTC ACTIVITIES (JOHN WAS OUR CADET COMMANDER) WHICH LED TO OUR COMMISSIONING AS SECOND LIEUTENANTS AT COMMENCEMENT IN JUNE 1955.

SINCE WE HAD THE SAME ACTIVE DUTY REPORTING DATE, WE MET AT LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE IN JANUARY 1956 WHERE WE GOT OUR INTRODUCTION TO AIR FORCE LIFE. FROM THERE, WE REPORTED FOR PRIMARY FLIGHT TRAINING AT BAINBRIDGE AIR BASE, GEORGIA AND ROOMED TOGETHER WITH ANOTHER SECOND LIEUTENANT IN BARRACKS NEAR OUR CLASSROOMS AND THE FLIGHT LINE. WE HAD DIFFERENT INSTRUCTORS AND DAILY SHARED OUR EXPERIENCES OF LEARNING TO FLY SINGLE ENGINE PROPELLER AIRCRAFT, FIRST THE T-34 AND THEN THE T-28.

WE TWO NEW ENGLANDERS ENDURED THE HOT GEORGIA SUMMER WEATHER WHILE GOING THROUGH CLASSES, INCLUDING A RIGOROUS PHYSICAL EXERCISE PROGRAM, AND THE DEMANDING PROCESS OF LEARNING TO FLY. A MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT WAS OUR FIRST SOLO FLIGHT.

WE MADE MANY NEW FRIENDS AND ENJOYED WEEKENDS RELAXING. NEITHER JOHN NOR I HAD A CAR AND WE OCCASIONALLY RODE WITH A GOOD FRIEND AND CLASSMATE T0 TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA WHERE WE STARTED PLAYING GOLF AT A MUNICIPAL COURSE. (A HALF CENTURY LATER, WE ENJOYED A ROUND TOGETHER IN WATERVILLE DURING OUR 50TH COLBY CLASS REUNION WHEN JOHN AND JANE STAYED AT OUR HOME.) A FAVORITE SWIMMING SPOT WAS WAKULLAH SPRINGS. JOHN LOVED SWIMMING THERE S0 MUCH THAT WE CALLED HIM THE PHANTOM OF WAKULLAH SPRINGS.

AFTER LEARNING HOW TO FLY, INCLUDING AEROBATIC MANEUVERS, WE REPORTED TO SAN ANGELO AIR FORCE BASE IN TEXAS FOR BASIC TRAINING IN THE B-25, THE FAMED TWO ENGINE BOMBER THAT THE DOOLITTLE MISSION FLEW OVER TOKYO IN THE EARLY MONTHS OF WORLD WAR II. AT THE END OF OUR TRAINING, WE RECEIVED OUR WINGS AND JOHN BECAME A FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR AT THE BASE WHILE I HEADED TO RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE FOR THREE MONTHS OF TRAINING IN THE KC-97 AIR REFUELING AIRCRAFT BEFORE REPORTING TO DOW AIR FORCE BASE IN BANGOR, MAINE.

JOHN HAD A DISTINGUISHED TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE IN THE AIR FORCE WITH MANY FLYING ASSIGNMENTS IN THIS COUNTRY AND ABROAD. HIS LAST POST WAS TO HEAD THE AIR FORCE ROTC AT DUKE UNIVERSITY. HE SERVED HIS COUNTRY EXTREMELY WELL DURING HIS ENTIRE CAREER. UPON LEAVING ACTIVE DUTY IN 1960, I RETURNED TO COLBY TO BEGIN A THIRTY-FIVE YEAR CAREER ON THE ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF AND FACULTY.

WE DIDN'T SEE EACH OTHER OFTEN OVER THE YEARS UNTIL WE GOT TOGETHER FOR COLBY ALUMNI ACTIVITIES AFTER OUR RESPECTIVE RETIREMENTS. WE KEPT IN FREQUENT COMMUNICATION WITH EACH OTHER AND, IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE- MENTIONED 50TH REUNION, JOHN, JANE, SHEILA AND I MET IN 2004 WITH OUR FRIENDS OF THE PILOT TRAINING CLASS 57 I FOR ITS 50TH REUNION, HELD IN COLORADO SPRINGS. WE HAD A GREAT TIME WITH OUR FRIENDS, INCLUDING SIDE TRIPS TO THE AIR FORCE ACADEMY, GARDEN OF THE GODS PARK AND CRIPPLE CREEK, THE OLD MINING TOWN.

A FEW YEAR LATER, JOHN AND JANE SPENT A VERY ENJOYABLE WEEK WITH US IN SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA WHERE WE HAD RENTED A CONDOMINIUM TO HAVE MORE TIME WITH OUR SON AND HIS FAMILY. WE ALSO MET WITH BOB AND BETTY THURSTON AT THEIR WINTER HOME NEAR TUCSON.

MY LAST MEETING WITH JOHN AND JANE WAS A VERY PLEASANT VISIT THEY MADE TO COLBY WITH JANE'S SISTER BOBBIE AND BROTHER-IN-LAW JERRY CREWS. AFTER A BRIEF TOUR OF THE CAMPUS, WE HAD LUNCH AND REMINISCED ABOUT OUR TIMES TOGETHER. OUR FRIENDSHIP CONTINUED BY INTERNET AND PHONE CONVERSATIONS WHICH I NOW MISS VERY MUCH.

John was two years older than me and we met through a mutual friend when I was about 12 or 13. We lived less than a mile from each other and ultimately worked together as pin boys in a bowling alley at a private club. We also worked together each spring getting the clay tennis courts at the private club ready for the summer. We both went to the same junior high and high school where we both played football, though John was a much better player and captain of his high school team. His sister Marion was in my high school class.

John and I lost touch in our later years and we saw each other only once when he came home from Colby one day. We subsequently renewed our friendship when he was retired from the Air Force and living in Citrus Heights, CA. He and Jane stayed with my wife and me at our home in Henderson, NV on one visit and we toured Red Rock Canyon together. We talked about going gold prospecting together outside Sacramento using his geology skills, but never got to do it! We always had a good time together and I miss him!

Uncle John was always so caring to us growing up and in later years he would have his weekly talks with my parents. I pray that you are now at peace and out of pain in heaven and continue to watch over your family and friends.

John was a great friend. We shared many hours at McClellan AFB as well as MediCare counsellors. Enjoyed many dinners with both John and Jane and our telephone conversations. Miss you John.

Johnny was a wonderful brother-in-law. We have so many memories of him. Helping him move in at Oxon Hills, due to a injury, visiting him when he was at Duke, lots visits to Maine, seeing him after he retired in Calafornia. We have surely enjoyed all of our visits with him and his family. Our four sons enjoyed the visit with him and Jane. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jane and the entire family during this difficult time. He is now flying high which so enjoyed. RIP Johnny until we meet again. Every time I eat a deviled egg I will always think of you.
Love you,
Jane

I was very lucky to have the dad I had. His accomplishments where many and made it a challenge to rise up to. Even though dad in his younger years did not show allot of emothions. I knew he loved watching me go my own way in life even if it was via the school of hard knocks. Dad loved his family, friends and USAF Pilots and ROTC Students he teached at Duke University/NCCU. We had so many memories traveling, Scuba Diving and Flying together in the Raleigh/ Durham, NC Civil Air Patrol. I love you dad a thank you for the life you help me achieve.

I adored my Uncle John. Very proud of him. Fondest memory besides his visits from Korea to see us in Japan were at My Grandmother's house. He and Uncle Warren loved chili; they would sit at the table with a big bottle of hot sauce. One started to pour on as much as he thought he could handle and the next had to top him. It could get pretty gross just much they used. Proud to be a part of this family and lucky enough to have known and loved him. Peace for his wife and children. Fly on Uncle John, I know you loved it.
