John Etcheverry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 30 to Oct. 1, 2017.

John Etcheverry
September 10, 1935 - September 26, 2017

John Etcheverry passed away suddenly, with his family by his side, on September 26, 2017. A loving husband, brother, dad, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, John was born to Felix and Rosalie Etcheverry, on September 10, 1935 in Bakersfield, California.

After graduating from Garces Memorial High School in 1953, John went on to graduate from California State University at Fresno with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. Shortly after graduation, he married his wife, Dorleen, in 1956 and became proud parents to Mary Ann and Mike.

John's forty-two-year agricultural career started out working on his family farm, then Bidart Brothers, Kern County Land Company, Tenneco West and Arroyo Seco Vineyards.

He was a devout Catholic and a great supporter of Catholic Education. He shared his gift of leadership both at St. Francis of Assisi Parish and Garces Memorial High School and was inducted into the Garces Memorial Hall of Fame in 2008. John was a proud advocate for the community, serving as a director and chairman on numerous boards and foundations.

John enjoyed the simple things in life. His best times were spent in Shaver Lake surrounded by friends and family, especially his grandchildren. John was a craftsman and a self-made engineer. He was a man of wisdom and insight. Whether you knew it or not, John was right and he knew it best.

John was preceded in death by his parents Felix and Rosalie Etcheverry and wife Dorleen Etcheverry. He is survived by his daughter Mary Ann (John) Putman, grandchildren John Jr. and Andrew Putman; son Mike (Laura) Etcheverry, grandchildren Jeff (Michelle), Jenny, Amy, David, and Christine Etcheverry, Rosie (Adam) Cook; great grandchildren Luke and Eleanor, sister Marie Jeanne (Lorenzo) Echevere, brothers Raymond (Joannie) and Albert (Monica) Etcheverry.

Services will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Monday, October 2, 2017 with Rosary at 9:30 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM, celebrated by Monsignor Craig Harrison; and interment at the Historic Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Garces Hail Mary Club, St. Francis Parish, or a charity of your choice.
