I worked with John for eight years and thoroughly enjoyed our conversations about the West Wing television show, and talking Navy football, John loved the academies so much and enjoyed talking about golf. but more importantly he was a great person to talk to about family and was a great sounding board when my family suffered a great loss in my family and will never forget his kindness and understanding

I met John when he was a Duke intern at WAPO, he was named Beat Writer for the NASL team there and I was The PR Director. That started a lifelong friendship spanning about 50 years. He stayed in touch the entire time and often put my name in his Book Acknowledgements and also made sure I was on his Wikipedia Page. He never forgot his friends and I will never forget him. RIP!

John and I were friends and partners during 14 seasons of Navy football broadcasts and nine years of Patriot League basketball telecasts. We shared a lot of great memories, especially every December over Army-Navy weekend, and more than a few other unforgettable moments on the air that today make me miss John more, even as they bring a smile in a sad moment, and wish we hadn't fallen out of touch in time. John and I spent countless hours in the car together to and from campus gyms, from the Lehigh Valley to Central Massachusetts. All of them filled with rich stories and, especially as the winter nights got later, meaningful conversations. All of them, from John's perspective and regardless of other topics, coming back around to Danny, Brigid and Jane. I will always appreciate those times, his counsel and the many ways he helped me professionally -- and more so, as I've come to realize, personally. My thoughts are with everyone in John's family and big circle of friends and colleagues.

I truly enjoyed Jon´s books and am very saddened to hear of his passing. He blessed us with his wonderful books and his detailed descriptions of conversations and events. I was just thinking about his book about Red Auerbach as I watch the HBO series Celtics City. I would have loved to have had the chance to meet him.
May he rest in peace and condolences to his family.
