Dear Deborah,
Brian and I are so sorry to hear the news of John's passing.
We remember him with great fondness - such a kind, warm, wonderful gentleman.
We remember greeting you both at the airport in Warsaw - and commenting on how you looked like a honeymoon couple!
We also remember the delightful dinners, luncheons and cocktail receptions at the Residence - how gracious and hospitable you both were.
One of the fondest memories I have of John was his gamely doing the "chicken dance" with me at a Christmas party in the Residence. It still brings a smile to my face.
Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Again, our deepest condolences.
Beverley (Davis)

My happiest post abroad was my ultimate - as number two under John when he was ambassador to Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. Yet this positive experience was recalled and polished by Christmas-eve dinners at John and Deborah's charming home in Ottawa ever since. John will continue as an honorable - and humorous - memory of other Canadians and contacts abroad. My deepest consolation to Deborah. Chris Spencer

Both of us had the honour to know and work with John as a distinguished former colleague in various facets of his career in the foreign service, until we all retired and went different ways. He was one of the first to greet me ( Chuck) on my entry into the Department in 1963, and as the Ambassador when Lisa went there to help with the opening of the new Canadian Embassy in Belgrade in 1984.That is to say we have many fond memories, professional and social, of John going back over four decades. So we will miss the comfort of knowing a friend and former colleague would be there in Ottawa on our infrequent visits. Condolences to the family. Charles and Lisa Svoboda, Benissa, Spain
