John shared a 5-man carpool for 5 years at HEW in Rockville, MD. I was one of fortunate drivers. His Boston, Irish wit came through constantly and made the journeys so much fun. Great man, great activist, great humanist.

I only met Mr. Gallivan briefly over 30 years ago. I was visiting family this past Sunday when I read his obituary in the Post. I remember his sense of humor best. Blessings to his family. May he rest in peace.

I am so sorry to learn of John's passing. I first met him in 1967 when he was the Peace Corps' Turkey Desk Officer and I started as one of the India Desk Officers. I immediately liked and respected John, and have kept up with him over the years. Later we both worked for HHS (I worked for FDA) and we would meet and catch up occasionally in the halls of the HHH building. Traveling in Italy about 15 years ago I ran by chance into a person who was a Turkey volunteer with John--she married an Italian and had been living in Tuscany for many years. As we talked we knew that we both knew John--part of that wonderful Peace Corps family with its many bonds. I am so sorry that he is no longer with us and send my deepest sympathy to his family.

John made a positive difference in many lives, in many places. He lives on in our lives, hearts and memories.

John occupies a fond space in my heart for his empathy, humour and sense of enjoyment. He made our days as volunteers a joy for a higher cause.

August 29, 2015

My deepest sympathy to John's family, and to his extended nework of friends and colleagues. He was generous with his time and encouragement with Peace Corps Volunteers when he was in Turkey, and that relationship continued through the Friends of Turkey group (Arkadaslar). He will be missed, but not forgotten.
