March 14, 1935 - February 25, 2025

John Andrew Glutting died last week at the age of 89 years old at his home in Hull. Andy, as everyone knew him, was the child of Barbara Blake Glutting and Paul Roland Glutting. His early years were spent in Boston and summers at Green Hill. As the son of a Rear Admiral, he moved several times including living in Shanghai as a child. He attended St. John's Prep, St Michael's College and completed his education at the University of Rhode Island. He joined the Navy and completed flight school becoming a helicopter pilot. He flew in Vietnam as well as a brief stint for Air America in Laos. He rejoined the Navy and retired as a Commander in 1978. An avid athlete he enjoyed tennis and ran multiple marathons, completing the Boston Marathon at the age of 60. He was particularly proud of building his own home on family land in Hull after attending the Shelter Institute in Maine.

He is survived by his children Joan Hastings Glutting and John-Paul Glutting, their spouses Adam Briggs Gilsdorf and Monserrat Rue as well as their children Jana Rue Glutting, Gloria Rue Glutting, John Hastings Glutting-Gilsdorf and Henry Russell Glutting-Gilsdorf. He is also survived by his niece Elizabeth Lord Glutting and by my many loving nephews and their children as well as many cousins in the Gannon family. He is predeceased by his parents, his brother Paul Glutting, sister-in-law Donalda Veal Glutting, nephews Russell Glutting, George Glutting, his loving sister Kate Arcand, friend and brother-in-law Richard Arcand, niece Mary Elizabeth Taran, and brother Joseph Christopher Glutting. He is predeceased by his former wife June Roberts and survived by his wife of recent years Cyndie.

A memorial will be held this summer at Green Hill. Donations in his memory can be made to the Boston Athletic Association to support the Boston Marathon.
