Dr. John Michael Goodman

John M. Goodman PhD, 80, a Raleigh native, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018 at his home in Supply, NC. He was the son of the late Tobias Goodman and Clarice Collins Goodman, and the brother of Tobias and William Goodman of Raleigh, who survive him.

His love of Raleigh included his friends from Fred Olds Elementary School and Needham Broughton High School, class of 1956, with an abiding love for the Raleigh farm team of the Boston Red Sox, with their teammate Carl Yastrzemski. He attended Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where he met his future wife, Jane Eloise Brooks, who also survives him.

Throughout the years, his family was his center. He and his wife, Jane Eloise Brooks, were married for sixty years. He had much love and pride for his children, Mary Jane Goodman-Giddens and Dr. Eugene M. Giddens, John Michael Goodman, Jr. and Dr. Victoria Risbrough, and Jenny Goodman Hansen, all who survive him. This love and pride extended beyond measure to his grandchildren: Hannah (and Ezra Lily and Skyler Lily), Caroline, Elliot and his fiancé, Keri, Ben, Isaac, and Noah Giddens; Steven, John, Luke, Gage, and Carson Hansen; and Dylan Risbrough Goodman. He is survived as well by two great grandchildren, Christian and Caleb Hierholzer, and his niece and her husband, Lillian and Ron Harding, and his nephew and his wife, Charles and Sherry Halterman.

John received his bachelors degree in Nuclear Engineering from NC State University, and as an Edison Scholar at the Naval Research Laboratory went on to receive a Ph.D. in physics from Catholic University. After dedicating 33 years to NRL, during which time he spent one year in the Hague, Netherlands at NATO, he worked at the Washington, D.C. office of Stanford Research and then formed a consulting firm with partner John Ballard of California, working primarily in radio propagation. Most recently he had been working with Mitre Corporation.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 14th at 2:00 pm at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2723 Clark Ave. Raleigh. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service , from 1:00 - 2:00 PM at Holy Trinity. Burial will follow the service at Raleigh Memorial Park.
