Born May 22, 1942, in Chicago, IL, John August Grom passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, October 25, 2023. He was surrounded with much love and support from his two sons, J.D. and Rob, who were with him during his last days; family; friends; and many others who had the joy of knowing him.
John was a loving father, son, brother, friend, community member, and teacher. Forced at an early age to forge his own path, John built a life, family, and legacy that will carry on for generations to come.
He attended Glenwood School for Boys (now Glenwood Academy), graduated from Bloom Township High School, and Northern Illinois University with a degree in education. John spent his entire career teaching at Barrington community schools mostly at Hough Street, Rosalyn Road, and Lines Elementary Schools. He finished his career teaching at Prairie Middle School.
John was an avid golfer constantly chasing his second par-round. He was an active volunteer in the Barrington community where he coached the girls high school golf team and countless little league teams, served on the village ethics committee, and in leadership roles for the annual CROP Walk. John was also an active member of the Community Church of Barrington.
Above all, John was a devoted and active father to J.D. and Rob. His greatest legacy is the strong men and fathers they have become.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on November 18, 2023 at the Community Church of Barrington (407 S Grove Ave, Barrington, IL 60010) with a luncheon to be held after.
John is survived by his two sons; J.D. (Stacy) Grom, Rob (Amanda) Grom; grandchildren Jack, Emma, Landry, Drew, and Holden; siblings: George Grom, Rose Adamczyk, Helen Seaman, Bonnie Karner, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Florence Adamczyk; step-father Matthew Adamczyk, Sr., father August Grom, Jr.; step-mother Elaine Grom; siblings August “Tony” Grom, III; Matthew Adamczyk, Jr.; and Larry Grom.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Community Church of Barrington or the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Foundation.
