John Gunderson overcame our family's decade-long quest to find a psychiatrist who could assist our adult child cope with two overlapping syndromes, including the "borderline personality disorder" pioneered and defined by Dr. G. Within 90 seconds of his introductory questions, we knew we had found the right physician.

We admire his warmth, his scholarship, his training progrsm at McLean and nationally, and his advocacy for both patients and their families. We are eternally grateful.

I played basketball with Gundy and mutual friends on an outdoor court adjacent to the lacrosse field at Hopkins, once when a game was on. Hopkins was so free you could do whatever you wanted. He was on the Honor Commission, which educated incoming students about the Hopkins Honor Code and investigated and determined guilt or innocence of students thought to have cheated. Astoundingly, the Hopkins Administration trusted students enough to run the Commission completely on their own. John was a stalwart member of the Commission, unfailingly calm and sensible. He commanded respect in the most unassuming way. He is missed, even by someone who didn't talk with him or have interactions for 50 years. My sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and the medical community across the world.

John was my classmate at Dartmouth Medical School, and he was all ready a prince at that time. Saw him last at our reunion just a few years ago, and we reminisced old times. Sad to see John gone. My humble thoughts for him and his family

I attended High School with Jack in Oshkosh, WI. We graduated in 1960. He was a warm, caring fellow with a lovable sense of humor and a great but humble intellect. I recall one stormy winter about Christmas time 1962 when Jack was in college on the East Coast, he came to West Point, NY where 2 of us, Peter Drahn and myself needed a ride home for Christmas leave. Jack picked us up in his VW Bug and drove us through a blizzard raging in upstate NY. The little front wheel drive drove through deep snow and slush without a hitch and we arrived safely home in Wisconsin. All in all it was a fun trip where the 3 of us traded commentary on many subjects. But sadly that was the last time I saw Jack though I knew of his becoming a psychiatrist. Little did many of us know of the monumental achievements of this amazing fellow. Rest in peace Jack. But the world needed you a little longer!

The Oshkosh Class of 1960 wishes to send our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Jack. It was such a pleasure to have him at our last reunion. Though he went on from high school to become so accomplished he will always remain our friend from Oshkosh High. Peace be with you all.

My best wishes to all the family. John was one of the all-time best people I have ever had the privilege of knowing! I met him on the basketball court at Weston High many years ago and then we also played a lot of tennis and golf over the years at WGC. Lots of laughs and incredible memories!

John was always a great competitor, very positive and smiling...a wonderful role model for me. I will think of him often!

We in psychiatry will miss Dr. Gunderson, a pioneer in making problems some people have understandable and provide hope for better.
