John Gutman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 9 to Mar. 10, 2023.
John Thomas Gutman "JT" died unexpectedly at home on March 7th in Sunapee, NH at the age of 76. John was born on July 19th 1946 in Queens, NY to Charles and Margaret Gutman. John graduated from Adelphi University with a bachelor's degree in business and then went on to graduate from the University of Vermont with a Master's degree in Business Administration. Fate brought John and Patty McGoldrick together 3,500 miles away in San Diego, CA on a work conference before the two were married in 2003 in Wilmot NH. It was true love at first sight and has been ever since. John started his professional career as the Colchester, Vermont school district Business Manager and went on to become the Vice President of Saint Michaels College for 18+ years. Following his time in academia, John furthered his career in the insurance industry by forming insurance brokerage company. He was also the president of Vermont School Board Insurance Trust of which he was a founder. John served on many boards and provided consult to any person or group who needed it. John retired in 2012 to dedicate more time to his numerous hobbies and interests. John was the proud father of two daughters, Cathy Scanlon and Jennifer Main, and step father to Michael Dutile and Joseph Godbout. A multi-talented man who inspired his children to strive for greatness and explore the boundaries of their own abilities with support and love throughout. John was also grandfather to 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; he was known to them as "Papa John". John was a skilled craftsman in his woodshop where he spent countless hours creating and building things for others. He was an intelligent and witty man who loved his family. He was a creative thinker, with an adventurous spirit. John spent countless hours in service to others and his community in any capacity. He was happiest when working in his workshop, fishing with family and friends, driving a boat, cooking for crowds, tending to his award-winning lawn, or watching his favorite tv shows with his beloved Patty by his side. His bear hugs will be missed by all. John is survived by his wife Patty (Sunapee NH), daughter Cathy Scanlon (Blaine, MN) her husband Tom and two children, Jen Main (Underhill, VT) her husband Tyler and their combined family of six children, Michael Dutile (Medway, MA) his wife Sarah and two children and Joseph Godbout (Sunapee, NH), his sisters Mary Alice Brenlinger and husband Marty ( Holliston), Lori Wild and husband Steve (Holden), and many nieces and nephews. John was a close colleague for 18 of my 40+ years at Saint Michael's. Extremely intelligent, confident and fun-loving. I would like to extend my sympathy to Cathy and Jen. Peace and blessings to John's family.

Had the honor to work with John at St. Michael's College and the pleasure of his friendship for many years! He was fun to be with as well as a mentor. I treasure my time and family at SMC and wish his family joy in visiting the memories of his accomplished life.
