John Gwynn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 6, 2025.
John Lennon Gwynn, 94, of Rossmoor, Walnut Creek, California, passed away at home near family on August 29, 2025.

He was born in Oakland, California, on July 4, 1931, to Charles Gruenhagen Gwynn and Ruth Lennon Gwynn.

From a pioneering California family, John was descended from William Merryman Gwynn, his great-grandfather, and John Robert Gwynn, his great-great-grandfather, who came west from Baltimore in 1849-1851 and were among the early settlers and builders of El Dorado, Placer, and Sacramento Counties and San Francisco.

John grew up in Oakland and Piedmont, California, and was graduated from Piedmont High School.

He then attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1954. He joined the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, which was a central part of his college years and with which he remained closely affiliated throughout his life. While at Cal, he participated in the Naval ROTC program and, upon graduation, received his commission in the United States Naval Reserve.

Following his commissioning, John served on active duty in Korea aboard the USS Helena (CA-75) of the U.S. 7th Fleet. He continued his service for the next 40 years as an active reservist, fulfilling weekend duties and summer cruises, and ultimately retired with the rank of Captain.

In 1957, after returning from the war, he joined Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate, where he worked through the mid-1980s. He then joined his father at his long-time family mortgage and real estate brokerage, the Gwynn Shields Company, where he worked until his mid to late 80s.

John was married in 1959 to Sally, with whom he had four children: John, Peter, Michael, and Betsy. Sally passed away in 1982. In 1983, he married Royanne, who had two daughters, Marianne and Harriet. They were married until her death in 2015.

During his ten years at Rossmoor, John enjoyed its peaceful, bucolic setting and took part in many clubs and activities: dominoes, the Couples Club, the Cal Alumni Club, the Republican Club, musical programs, dinner dance events, bi-weekly lunches with friends from high school and college, and weekly BBQs with friends. He also joined the veterans' holiday flag-raising team. Central to all of this was the companionship of his dear friend Margaret.

He is survived by his six children; five grandchildren: Shannon, Teresa, Michaela, Carley, and Caitlin; three great-grandchildren: Griffin, Blake, and Kiana; and his younger sister, Ann. He was predeceased by his beloved sister, Patricia.

John was devoted to family and friends and maintained close connections throughout his life, including many lifelong friendships from high school and college. He was an industrious householder and enjoyed golf, jogging in his earlier years, and the fellowship of the Claremont Country Club with Royanne and their friends. Celebrating his Fourth of July birthday was always a special thrill for him. One of his great interests was genealogy, and he spent years chronicling the family's history across numerous branches and generations.

Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the California Genealogical Society or to the organization of your choice.

I first met John in 2018 when Mike and I had the pleasure of playing 9 holes of golf at the beautiful Rossmoor Club with him. John was always a very kind and gracious gentleman, and I loved hearing his Navy stories. As stoic as he was, he always let me give him a big hug and kiss on the cheek. I will forever remember him with a welcoming smile on his face and warm personality that made everyone comfortable in his presence. He was great father who raised 4 wonderful children in the face of adversity. In spite of all the challenges he faced, he always focused on the positive. I am so glad I had the opportunity to know John. I am saddened by his passing but grateful to know he lived one of the fullest lives and passed peacefully on his own terms. We are all blessed.
