I remember seeing you on the channel 5 news as a kid. You were a great anchorman. RIP John Hambrick....

Dear Barbara and brother Mike,
I extend my sympathy to both of you and all of the family.
Since I was several years behind John in school, I didn't really know him, but Mike and I were in the same class when they lived in Talco. Mike was a good classmate and friend. I was sorry to see them leave that little oil field town.
I pray that God will give you the peace you need during this time.

Dear Barbara and Family,
Please accept our deepest sympathy for the loss of John. My family and myself were fortunate to know John and Barbara in a personal way and spent many fabulous hours having great times at Willow Hill Farm on Harper Rd., in Solon, Ohio. I had several meaningful and fascinating conversations with John and always admired his depth, insight, sensitivity and sense of humor. John and Barbara are a unique couple in that it was obvious they were very much in love. Barbara and family, I wanted to tell you , I posted a notice on FaceBook and the response was unbelievable. These were all "kids" in high school at the time John was on the air and probably didn't often watch the news. But there was something special about John that did not go unoticed. I know my daddy, Norbert was a tremendous admirer of Johns'.Do know you are all in our hearts and my mother, June and myself send you our love. June Hibshman and Kay Hibshman-de Capua.

To John's family - I am saddened that you have lost this wonderful human being; death steals our loved ones, but it can't steal our memories. I know you will be comforted by the joyous times you all shared together. When John Hambrick arrived in Cleveland in the early 70's, I was a young mother to two precious little boys. But, I loved John; his deep voice, the way he presented the news and I appreciated his friendship with Fred Griffith (You see...I loved Fred, too!). When John's music album Windmill was released, I think I bought the 5th copy sold. I sang those songs DAILY to my little boys & danced around my living room with the kids in my arms. I memorized every song and pictured John and Fred on some of their trips together. In time, John left Cleveland and we all moved on. I, did however, always hang on to that record album - even when I no longer had a stereo to play the "old" record on. So, for the heck of it, I just checked iTunes on the off-chance that John's music would be for sale there. Imagine my delight and surprise to find the album there!! I listened to each song, the words easily returned to my memory, as if I'd just sang them yesterday. I've just purchased the album and it'll be on my iPhone and iPad. I can't wait. My little boys are now men, but maybe one of them will still dance with me to John's songs! Thanks for the memories.

I was a high school classmate of Johnny and Barbara and can recall their first "date"; his acting aspirations and the detailed memories shared with our mutual friend Jerry Russel as we stayed in the enormous house in Mt. Vernon, TX which his parents purchased and lived in around the final couple of years of Talco HIgh School. We kept in touch over the next decade or so and once visited over dinner in NYC following his anchor there on ABC and he met my wife Donna, for the first time--likely in the early '80's. His two younger brothers also had my mother, Mikie Richeson as their school teacher in the 3rd Grade in Talco. I learned of Johnny's passing with a phone call from our old high school buddy, Jerry Russel, this morning and our conversation brought back a flood of recollections from those years of 1957-1958 of our shared lives in Talco. The passing of an old friend is a renewed remainder of the impermanence of our lives together and the enduring memories of shared experiences during our formative years.

A suburban Cleveland radio reporter, I entered John's world in 1972. I sat directly across from him in our WEWS TV newsroom for better than 2 years and we both sat adjacent to the assignment desk.
He was 7 years older than I and much more mature and experienced. I was a bit hurt at the time as John explained to me that I might have quite a future in the business, I certainly had the potential, he felt. 'But Jay, you've got to learn how to write TV news'. John sort of assumed the role of mentor. With it came a good scolding now and then. Is that what a traditional 'big brother' does?
At least I had the maturity to realize this : Being hand-picked by John Hambrick as his struggling underling colleague could be a badge of honor.
That's how I remember you, 'big brother'. RIP. R I P.
