John Harlow Obituary
Born on November 15, 1940, in Vincennes, Indiana, Jack led a life defined by service-to his country, his community, and those around him. Jack was dedicated to his family and especially his grandchildren. He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps before earning a master's degree in Social Studies from Indiana University. This academic foundation launched a career that blended education, public service, and compassion.
Jack began his professional journey as a social studies teacher but soon followed in his father's footsteps into law enforcement. Starting as a patrol officer in Vincennes, he later dedicated the majority of his career to the Indiana Department of Corrections as a parole officer. In his later years, he served as a counselor at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in southern Indiana, where he worked to provide rehabilitative services to inmates-reflecting his deep belief in second chances and human dignity.
Beyond his professional life, Jack was deeply involved in community service. He co-founded the Bloomington chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters and volunteered regularly throughout the area. Known for thoughtful gestures-sending flowers or making heartfelt birthday calls-Jack left lasting impressions on those around him.
He had a lifelong passion for Sherlock Holmes and found joy in reading mysteries and engaging with fellow enthusiasts.
Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marcia Harlow; sons Aaron Harlow and John Harlow; sister Sharon Nelson; and parents Myrtle and James Harlow.
He is lovingly remembered by his granddaughters Heather Harlow and Cordelia Harlow; grandson Nathan Harlow; daughter-in-law April Adkins (Aaron); nephews Todd Nelson, Kent Nelson, and Barry Nelson; and many others whose lives were touched by his kindness.
A memorial service honoring Jack's life will be held at a later date.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a lasting reminder of a life lived with purpose and compassion.

Prayers for Jack´s family. He was a wonderful man with a huge heart. I learned so much from Jack when we shared an office together at WVCF as counselors. He taught me a lot about corrections and most importantly about life. He was a tremendous mentor to me in the mid 1990´s that helped me maneuver my way through a career in corrections. I will forever remember Jack and the impact he had on me. After Jack retired I could always count on him to call me on my birthday. I would answer the phone to him singing "Happy birthday to you...". I cherish those memories. Rest in peace my old friend.
