John Stewart Harvey Jr. (1932-2024)

John Stewart Harvey Jr., a man of many passions, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2024, at the age of 91.

Professional Life

Stewart learned the Fred Harvey Restaurant and Hotel business through on the job experience but decided that it was not his passion, and he found his own path in economics. Stewart exemplified the ethic of hard work throughout his career as an investment portfolio manager and was diligent in following world economics.

Proud Marine

Stewart was very proud of his service with distinction serving two tours of duty as a Marine during the Korean war. This experience left a profound impact on him. He held a lifelong respect for those who served their country. He periodically attended Marine functions and reunions.

A Lifelong Scholar and History Enthusiast

Stewart was a voracious reader and a lifelong student of history. He actively participated in colonial reenactments, immersing himself in the past as both a British Cavalry solider astride his horse and as a colonial Minuteman. Stewart also enjoyed attending Scottish clan gatherings as a representative of the Keith Clan.

A Hawkish Debater

Stewart relished intellectual discussions. His well-read mind allowed him to dissect arguments and challenge the best debaters.

Mountains and Forests

Stewart loved the Mountains and Forested places and enjoyed skiing and hiking. He learned technical climbing and tackled many of the great peaks of the world. He had great respect for the early mountaineers and preferred to wear lederhosen when he was hiking. He loved to yodel across glacial lakes to cause an echo. He was especially fond of the mountains in New Mexico where he lived as a teenager and later vacationed with his family annually, while visiting the Harveys in Santa Fe.

An Equestrian

Stewart had a lifelong passion for horses and participated in equestrian sports including Polo, Fox hunting and long trail rides.

Solice in Art

Stewart found great solace in working on his oil painting and writing.

Love of Animals

Stewart loved animals including pets and farm animals. He was proud of his participation in Future Farmers of America when he was young and shared that passion with his children. He was particularly fond of cats (including wild cats).

Proud Coach

He passionately fostered his children in diverse sports including winter sports, mountain climbing, horsemanship, baseball and chess. He also introduced his children to farm animal husbandry.

His legacy is his family.

John Stuart Harvey, or Stewart as he preferred to be called by his nickname, was my Father in Law. Besides economics and politics we would occasionally discuss music. We shared a common affinity for pipe organ music and anything bizarre. As a retired commercial pilot who now produces electronic music, I asked him once to critique some of my songs. He did so with the attention to detail that he often gives to whatever he decides to do, which I appreciated. We even marched together as minutemen in parades. He will be missed.

Stewart was a key early mentor of mine in the investment world. We also shared a deep love of mountains and skiing. I wish I had been able to say goodbye to a thoroughly decent man

I have many fond memories of my time with Mr Harvey and his daughter Rebecca when I was a young child. It's hard to keep them in order because there were tons of great and fun experiences. One of the most memorable activities was the fox hunts in Pepperell, Massachusetts, during the fall hunting season. We would load up the ponies and head off for an adventure. Mr Harvey was always up for a good time, but he was also responsible and made sure we were safe. I recall many hikes and ski trips with the Harveys, and Mr Harvey always kept us in line. He didn't tolerate slackers or any messing about. Unfortunately, I lost touch with Mr Harvey and his family when Rebecca and I grew up and went on with our lives. However, we reconnected on Facebook, and we've been in touch for over a decade now. We laugh about our shared stories, and no time has passed. Mr Harvey's children have grown up to be highly successful adults, and his wife, Cynthia, is a beautiful and strong woman. They were a vital part of my young life, and Mr Harvey taught me many things. He is missed, and I send my love and hugs to the Harvey family.
