Mike was a 1963 graduate of Brewer High School, where he enjoyed playing football. Mike was a surveyor and past president of Maine Society of Land Surveyors. In addition to his mother of Hermon, he is survived by his sons, Andrew of Gardiner, Matthew of Topsham and John of Portland; the mother of his children, Carol (Brown) Haskell of Bowdoinham; sister, Ginny Wilson of Hermon; brother, Kenneth of Henrietta, N.Y.; sister, Catherine of West Burke, Vt.; brother, Lawrence of Springfield, Ill.; an uncle, aunts, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. We moved to Maine from Washington, D.C. in 1976. Not sure when I met Mike but it was back then. 3 days after meeting him at his new house in Richmond(?) it burned down. I was stunned, Mike just moved ahead w/ plans for a new one. His lifestyle was envious; his sense of humor overwhelming, as was his ability to master HP automated drafting systems. Lost touch with him in 90's(?) and shocked to just hear of his death in Guyana.....but he's out there somewhere, moving on to the next adventure, an inspiration to those of use faced with similar misfortune....what ever happened to his 6 wheeled all terrain vehicle?

My sincere sympathy to his sons, Carol, and family. Mike was an original, funny and brillant. He gave my daughter, Jennifer, her first job when he opened his surveying business in Brunswick. He saw talent in young people and encouraged their success. "Life is either a tightrope or a feather bed." (E.Wharton) I think Mike preferred the tightrope.

My condolences to the family of a wonderful man. Mike preceded and inspired me as a surveyor and as Chairman of the licensing board. His involvement in the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying was a tough act to follow and I know he will be missed by the surveying community across the nation. Godspeed Mike.

Ginny and family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. I remember how friendly and helpful Mike was when Irene Richter (AFS Student '62-63) lived with my family.

I knew Mike only somewhat by bumping into him in the surveying world. Like Mike, I am a past-President of the Maine Society of Land Surveyors. I would see him from time to time over the 20+ years I have been in this business. I always remember him cutting up and telling humorous stories.

My symapthies to the family.

Mike Haskell was my scoutmaster in troop 16 in Brewer, Maine. He was one of my most memorable role models of my youth. Self-reliant, hard-working, honest, earnest and full of kindness. Mike was an example to me of manly leadership and a can-do spirit. Mike Haskell was an inspiration to me and many boys. I am shocked and saddened at the loss. Deepest sympathies to his family.

Mike was one of my dad Bruce Booker's best friends back in high school and college and had just this summer found me on Facebook to catch up...we reminisced about my dad and he told me that he often thought about those days wtih him...especially the days in the apartment on Langley St. with Merle (Dobie) Bragdon and Dave Staples, saying those were good times. It was so nice to chat with him, and made me smile...my deepest sympathies to Mike's family, but know that he is in good hands as my dad will be right there greeting him...luckily we get to keep our loved ones in our hearts forever.

Mike was my Scoutmaster and friend. I had a wonderful time with Mike when he visited me at Camp Roosevelt in the summer of 2009. As Scoutmaster of Troop 16 Brewer, Mike taught us how to stand on our own two feet. There was never a boring moment being with Mike.

I'm proud to say Mike was my friend.

My condolences to Mike's family. I went to school with his brother Ken. I did not know Mike well but I do remember him. Mike played football with my brother Tom at Brewer High School. My brother died 2 years ago and I received an e-mail from Mike who I believe was living in South America at that time. The e-mail was full of memories about he and Tom and growing up in Brewer. He made me laugh at a time when I needed a lift. I am sad his life was cut short. I wish the family the best. Ralph Mansell

Having known him a shorter time than many, Mike seemed always, to be living his 'best life' in every day. An example I'll try to be mindful of too. Much sympathy to those who knew him better. Be well as you can.
