John Hempel Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 14, 2023.
John Edward Hempel, Jr. died on June 22, 2023

The son of the late John E. Hempel Senior and Maxine M. (Walsh) Hempel, John was born in Clinton, IA on August 3, 1945. Both of his parents were active duty members of the military serving at the Shick Army Hospital in Clinton at the time.

He graduated from Saint Mary's High School in 1963, Clinton Community College in 1965 and Loras College, Dubuque, IA in 1967. Following military service from 1967-70, he obtained a Master's Degree in Political Science and Public Administration from lowa State University in 1972.

He was a combat wounded Army veteran of the Vietnam War where he was a platoon leader and executive officer with A Troop, 1st Squadron, 1st Armored Cavalry, Americal Division, 1969-70. Notable Army Reserve and National Guard assignments following active duty were as Senior Tactical Officer of the lowa and Arizona National Guard Office Candidate Schools and Armor Company Commander of the 1/632d Armor, Wisconsin Army National Guard. He reached the rank of Major before Vietnam related injuries forced an early military retirement in the early 80's.

Following a year teaching economics and political science at the Clinton Community College, John began a 35 year career in 1973 with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Human Resources at the VA in Little Rock, Arkansas. He held a number of other positions throughout the VA during his career and eventually served as COO at multiple VA locations across the country before being named CEO of the Las Vegas VA in 2001. He held this position until his retirement in 2004.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret M. (Burton) Hempel; their sons John Hempel III of Spokane, WA, Joshua Hempel of Reno, NV and daughter, Jessica Grizzell of Elmhurst, IL; sisters Diane McGrellis of Hockessin, DE, Margaret Hornberger of Northeast, MD; and beloved grandchildren: Lillian Hempel and McKenzie Drake of Spokane, WA and Finley, Sophie and John Grizzell of Elmhurst, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Maxine, and his sisters Mary Hempel and Barbara Hempel.

Outside of his dedication to his family and career, John spent much of his free time on the tennis court. He had a strong love for the game and was often seen running local tournaments or serving as Captain to a number of USTA teams over the years. John was also an avid outdoorsman - with a strong love for hunting and fishing.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Tucson VA Medical Center's General Post Fund (https://www.cdceportal.va.gov/donate_at_facility/) or the Disabled American Veterans (https://www.dav.org/ways-to-give/) are encouraged.

My Ompa, I am so proud to have spent the time I did with him and now carry his memory with him as I go through this life. One of a kind person and lucky to be his granddaughter. A true Leader in all aspects in life and I have the upmost respect him and his accomplishments. I loved being his granddaughter and going on walks with him and Molly. The world was a better place with Him in it and I miss Him everyday.
Love Lilly.

Like everyone who knew John they knew what a great guy he was. I loved playing tennis with him, and when he was my partner, he was always so supportive. If I made a mistake, he would look at me and smile, and simply say keep swinging.

I was on many of John's USTA teams, and we were partners for many matches. I also enjoyed competing against a very good tennis player at the
many places that we played over the years. I had missed John on the court for a few years but had been able to get together for coffee occasionally. He was a very good person and friend. Margaret and family, I am sorry for your loss.

John Hempel was a good friend. We played tennis together 2 or 3 times a week for 15 years. Traveled to El Paso and other places with John, and met him for dinner in Spokane,WA.
Met John and a few others for lunch or coffee every so often for good conversation.
John will be missed.

John hired me at the LV VAMC as a VP early in my career. I learned several things that I've taken with me in my VA Career. He was a passionate Servant Leader and served all Veterans well. I'm grateful that I got to know John. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

My name is Daniel Thornton. John was a year behind me in school and we didn´t hang out a lot together but I remember him as a wonderful warm nice person. He reconnected with me about a year or so ago through Eddy DOYLE we had a nice conversation on the phone and I had no idea that he was this ill. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his wife and his family. You lost a wonderful person!

I knew John through tennis and he was a talented player and fierce competitor, as well as a true gentleman on and off the court. He was a great storyteller and I am going to miss him greatly. Peace be with his family during this difficult time.

Maggie I am so sorry to hear about John. I enjoyed running into him thru the tennis world and we had some great chats about our love of dogs. I can´t say I am surprised of all his accomplishments that I read about in his obituary because he displayed many leadership qualities in the tennis world. He played a big part of USTA league tennis.
