John Hiser Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 14, 2022.
John Henry Hiser, Jr. passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on August 11, 2022, at age 84. John grew up in Bethesda, MD. He attended St. Albans School in Washington, D.C. He spent his summers at his family's home on the Chesapeake Bay, where he developed his love for boating, fishing and crabbing. John enjoyed a career in construction for over forty years as owner of J.H. Hiser Construction Company, Potomac, MD.

John lived a life devoted to God, family, community and country. John proudly served as a Captain in the U.S. Army where he lead his battalion on the DMZ during the Vietnam War. He was devoted to his church where he taught Sunday school for many years. Known for his generosity and community service, John was involved with many charitable and local organizations. In his "retirement", he moved permanently to the Bay and purchased Skipper's Pier Restaurant and Paradise Marina in Deale which he proudly ran until the day he died.

John was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gail Owings Hiser, his two children Caren (Wesley) Fisher, Bonnie (Paul) Turner, and his 5 wonderful grandchildren.

There will be a service to celebrate his life Friday, August 26 at 11:00 at Friendship Community Baptist Church, 37 Jewel Road in Dunkirk. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be send to Friendship Community Baptist Church.

One of my first jobs as a kid was setting pins under the Hiser theater. Before they had bowling automatic pin setters, it was done by hand. Spent some time at the Hiser home in the Hamlet and remember John well, may he rest in peace.

On behalf of my family, particularly my late brothers Jimmy and Larry, sincere condolences to the Hiser family. We go back to St. Albans days where all of us were friends; more recently John ' the Boss' and I exchanged lots of emails on old cars, of which he was a devotee. What a nice person throughout his life..I shall truly miss him and am a richer person for having known him so long.

What a gift it was to grow up next door to the Hisers! My favorite memories of Mr. Hiser are from the days when he coached our girls' soccer team. He was tough and demanded the best - and we loved it! I also always knew he loved us. He is such an icon..I kind of can't believe he's gone, but I know he is much happier in Heaven now. Lots of love and prayers for Mrs. Hiser, Caren and Bonnie and their families.
