John Lindsey Hittell

John and I would walk three miles, each morning at our local sports center in Rincón, Puerto Rico. He made me speak Spanish with him and helped make my Spanish "tolerable" to the kind Puerto Ricans in our little town. He was kind, intelligent, witty, and fun to be around. My husband and I enjoyed his friendship. He is missed.

Our time in Puerto Rico overlapped with that of John's. He was part of the church I served, and became a friend. I remember the first time he came to the church. We meant in an open-air pavilion, and our study was interactive (people could raise their hands and ask questions). I had just started teaching that morning, and I saw John slumped in his chair, with his legs stretched out, his head lowered, and his eyes closed. I thought at least I was helping him get some sleep. But then suddenly his hand went up, and he had a really perceptive question. I learned then never to underestimate John Hittell! (He told me later that was his way of really focusing on what he was listening to.)

We had many thought-provoking discussions over the years, and shared a lot of laughs. I was always intrigued to hear his take on any subject. And I appreciated his desire to truly be of help. John was a great guy, one of a kind, and it's sad to think of a world without him. But we'll see you again, my friend!

Funny story about John!
In 2001, John showed up to our move in day, when we first started living in Puerto Rico!
A group of church people came to help on the big day! Theo container took month to arrive, and it was like Christmas morning!
John came to help unload the shipping container, Seastar, with our furniture from California.
I still remember him joking about every single thing that went into the house! Don´t remember him carrying anything in himself! Just joking about each and every iteam that passed by as he stood by!

So sorry to hear of John´s passing. He was such a great guy!
My husband and I knew him from his years in Rincon, Puerto Rico.
He regularly attended "Church Without Wall´s", which my husband Curt used to teach.
John took the greatest pleasure in "harassing" Curt after each sermon! They would banter back and forth over the points made! Coming up with the silliest ideas about it all! They always ended up laughing hysterically about something! Never a dull moment!
John was always full of jokes and spunk! If he could get a rise out of you, "Victory!"
He was fun and spicy!

I knew he was very gifted and special, but hadn´t heard his whole story!

My wife and I met John during our 12-year stay in Rincon, Puerto Rico. John could discuss and would, debate any topic under the sun while we did our laps around the track. John lived life to the fullest. His song was not unsung.

John was a friend from our years in Rincón, Puerto Rico. He was my walking buddy at the local running/ jogging track where we walked three miles each morning. During that time, he´d have me consistently working on my conversational Spanish. His patience and sense of humor helped me become confident enough to make life long friends, and pass my real estate broker´s license in Spanish. John made people think and offered different view points that inspired us all to look at things from a different perspective. He enriched the lives of those he met. It was a pleasure to know you, kind sir. You will be missed.
