John Hogan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 2 to Sep. 3, 2007.
HARWICH PORT - John M. Hogan, 90, died Aug. 30, 2007, at Epoch Senior Healthcare of Harwich.

He was the loving husband of Jeanne (LeFevre) Hogan for 61 years.

A native of Irvington, N.J., he received a bachelor of science degree in 1941 and a Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1949 from Rutgers University, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Forces as a wing navigator (major).

Mr. Hogan worked with a grant from the Atomic Energy Commission at the University of Iowa from 1949-1951. He was a research biochemist for Swift & Co., Chicago, Ill., from 1951-1961, during which time he received the Industrial Achievement Award, and his work resulted in many patents (U.S. and Canadian). From 1961 to his retirement in 1977, he was a professor of food science at the University of Maine, Orono. In addition to teaching, he conducted research to benefit the various food industries within the state.

After retiring to Cape Cod, he became an avid gardener, producing enough fruits and vegetables for family and friends. In the winter months, he found time for oil painting, furniture making and reading westerns, especially those written by Louis L'Amour. At all times, he enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren, and walking along the beaches.

He will be missed by his wife, Jeanne, as well as by his daughters, Pam Hogan of Kennebunk, Maine, Peg Murphy of Harwich, and Sally Curtin of Kingwood, Texas; a brother, Matthew Hogan of Vacaville, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private funeral arrangements have been made.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Cape Cod, 712 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601.
