I am saddened by the news of the passing of this great scholar. I send my sincerest condolences to his wonderful family. Though I only knew him in his twilight years, his kindness, mentorship and strong support of my own work have left an indelible impression. I hope to be a credit to his Uchimura legacy. John's enthusiasm for railways led him to Transport 2000 BC / Transport Action BC, an organisation dedicated to improving passenger rail transportation and public transit. He joined the organisation in 1988 and was a valued contributor over the years.

John was a wonderful conversationalist, always smiling and quick to praise. His insights and gentlemanly manner will be missed.

On behalf of Transport Action BC, I wish to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to John's family.

Sincerest sympathies, Christian and family, on the passing of your wonderful father John. I remember his big happy laugh and his generosity. Your parents were so good to mine in those early Japan years. He and Lyn would pick me and my sister Janet up for hugs, way up! We thought they were the most wonderful people, and they were. May you find solace in knowing he was loved by so many! Adrienne Graham Gardner

Christian and Forman,

Stan and I send our condolences to you and the whole family in the passing or your father...an inspiration to hundreds of students over his many years as an educator.

With your mother Lyn, your parents opened your home and the house on 3rd Avenue was always a hub of conversation and music. I remember with great fondness your yearly Advent parties with your father at the organ and the tremendous singing of carols.

Your father's ability as a raconteur was legendary and his stories of Asia just after the war were as fresh and interesting years later as if he had just experienced them.

We are happy to have known him.
