John Howard Hudson July 27, 1923 April 23, 2010 John passed away on Friday, April 23, 2010 at Sunnyside Adventist Care Centre in Saskatoon at the age of 86. He is survived by his loving wife, Doreen (Whatley, Hulgan); his daughters: Heather Hudson (Daniel Gelon) of Seattle, WA and Penny (Sheldon) Tataryn of Calgary; and Doreen's children: Robert (Barbara) Hulgan of Kindersley, Donna Carlson-O'Keefe (Brian O'Keefe) of Saskatoon, Wray (Femmie) Hulgan of Moose Jaw, Marilyn (Ron) Shea of Kindersley, and Janet (Barry) Adams of Medicine Hat, AB. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Christopher (Sonya) Hulgan, Kyla Shea (Rob Stonehouse), RaeAnn Shea (Alex Forrest), Janice Shea, Joleen Shea, Alexis Adams, and Joel Adams; two great-grandsons, Tyson and Karter Hulgan; his sister, Winnifred King of Vancouver; a niece and two nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Allan and Dorothy (Bower) Hudson; sister, Dorothy in infancy; his first wife, Lorena (Whitaker); and son-in-law, Lloyd Carlson. John was born and raised on the family farm at Parkbeg, SK. He attended the University of Saskatchewan, earning an M.A. in Chemistry. He worked for many years at the Saskatchewan Research Council as a ceramics engineer. Under contract to the federal International Development Research Centre, he made several trips to Latin American countries such as Panama, Guyana and Ecuador to advise them in the development of their clay deposits for the benefit of local communities. Besides his interest in chemistry and geology, he had a great interest in and love for botany. He loved to go on botanizing trips throughout Saskatchewan, collecting more than 5000 specimens of native plants. With little formal training in botany, he nevertheless came to be considered one of the two foremost botanists in the province. He recently donated his extensive collection to the W.P Fraser Herbarium at the U of S. He and Doreen enjoyed square dancing , traveling (Alaska, Turkey, Greece, Australia, Panama, Ecuador) and a nightly game of Scrabble. He was a brilliant, knowledgeable man with a dry but delightful sense of humour, and he will be greatly missed. The Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at St. Stephen's Anglican Church (10 Grosvenor Crescent) with Rev. Don Byrt officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Saskatoon Nature Society, Box 448 RPO University, Saskatoon, SK S7N 4J8. John's wish was that his ashes be scattered on his land at Parkbeg. Arrangements in care of Prairie View Chapel, 242-7884.

I worked with John at the Saskatchewan Research Council in the late 1970s and early 80s. John contributed his expertise in plant taxonomy to environmental assessments and baseline studies in the north, including the Cluff Lake and Key Lake uranium mining areas. I enjoyed working with John, and appreciated his wisdom, modesty and quiet sense of humour. Regarding his profession as a ceramics engineer he would joke that he was one of the world's experts on kitty litter. When I asked him how he became interested in botany, he said that he needed a hobby to keep him occupied when he was growing up on the family farm.

I will always remember the time we had in the field with john and many discussions at SRC. He is a real loss to Saskatoon and Saskatchewan. John Polson

John was a long-serving treasurer and active member of the Saskatoon Nature Society. I have always valued his advice while we served together on the board. I enjoyed the numerous botany field trips that he organized for the society, especially his annual orchid trip to MacDowell Bog.
