I worked with John at the Saskatchewan Research Council in the late 1970s and early 80s. John contributed his expertise in plant taxonomy to environmental assessments and baseline studies in the north, including the Cluff Lake and Key Lake uranium mining areas. I enjoyed working with John, and appreciated his wisdom, modesty and quiet sense of humour. Regarding his profession as a ceramics engineer he would joke that he was one of the world's experts on kitty litter. When I asked him how he became interested in botany, he said that he needed a hobby to keep him occupied when he was growing up on the family farm.

I will always remember the time we had in the field with john and many discussions at SRC. He is a real loss to Saskatoon and Saskatchewan. John Polson

John was a long-serving treasurer and active member of the Saskatoon Nature Society. I have always valued his advice while we served together on the board. I enjoyed the numerous botany field trips that he organized for the society, especially his annual orchid trip to MacDowell Bog.
