In memory of
Wendy D White
June 24, 2025
In 1979, John Hurley hired me to be the librarian for his board at the National Academy of Sciences. The Board on Science and Technology for International Development was my introduction to what would be a 30-year career at the NAS. John believed in me and gave me the confidence and resources I needed to build a major program. I was crushed when he left for the MacArthur Foundation! I did see him several times in Chicago. I hope he knew what a great boss he had been to me. I was going through old boxes of stuff and I found this picture. That started me on a search for John and I found his obituary. I am so sorry! The world lost a good one.

Dear Linda and Family: I am thinking of you and sending you all my love during this difficult time. John was a wonderful human being and I will treasure him always. He was a wonderful and kind human being. I am honored to have met him and spend a few years working with him not only as my boss but as a colleague and friend. Hugs to each of you.

It was my pleasure to have worked with and for John during his career at the MacArthur Foundation. John exhibited unquestionable loyalty to the institution and people with whom he worked. A company man in the best sense of the word, he was MacArthur´s utility player who quietly performed at an all-star level in every position he held and assignment he worked on at MacArthur. His integrity, intelligence, humanity and good judgment shined though out his career at the Foundation. It's been my privilege to call John a friend and colleague. Linda, I am truly sorry for your loss.

When I think of John, I remember our times together on the Shake Rag Alley Board of Directors and his many efforts to keep the fledgling non-profit school alive through his dedication, vast experience, intellect, creativity, and generosity. John, dear John...always pleasant, always ready to pitch in no matter what the task... from writing grants to sitting with the gals stuffing envelopes. My sincere condolences to Linda and the family.
