Dale - I have thought of you both often and wondered how you were doing. Being a single parent (as I well know) is not the easiest, but given the strengths both you and John exhibited, I am positive you prevailed to the benefit of us all.

So many times I've wondered what John would say, what he would do; so many times I've wished we could take trips to our favorite bookstores. So many times I've missed his friendship. . . .

I knew John from my visits with him at the Aberdeen Bookstore. As a fellow military veteran and fellow historian, I greatly enjoyed discussing military history with him. I too am a graduate of Northglenn High School ('77) and also a CU grad (BA History '81), so we had a lot in common! It was John who encouraged me to volunteer at Aberdeen, and after I started working there on Saturdays, John often called to see how things were going. I am greatly saddened at his death. May God bless him and his loved ones. Eternal Rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him.

Dale,
I am so sorry for your loss. He was a good man who loved God and his family very much. I enjoyed working with him, and my granddaughter remembers him letting her play with the planes and soldiers he had in his office when she came to visit. He will be missed.

From Boy Scouts, to Northglenn High, to the law, John was a good friend, even though we have not spoken for some time. I am sadden to learn of his unexpected death, which diminishes us all.

Dale,
I am so sad at this news of John's passing and especially so unexpectedly. I personally will miss John for many reasons: his impeccable scholarship and writing skill, his generosity at sharing his great knowledge, his willingness to say yes when asked to participate in local history events in Colorado Springs. But more than anything else, although John and I saw each other only a handful of times over the past 8 or 9 years that we were acquainted, I'm going to miss John's sense of fun and adventure. There was never one time in his presence (and yours as well) that I did not have fun. Please know that I am profoundly sad at you loss as well as mine.

What a loss, I am so terribly saddened. John had a great understated sense of humor. We took several classes together through Jr/and high school. He was a big reason I was able to pass geometry class. We nearly always seated alphabetically so I saw a lot of him. I will miss him quietly from Albuquerque New Mexico as I know his Denver friends and family will remember him properly. Lisa Hutton Dillon

I am very saddened to hear of John's passing. I had lunch with John after the NGHS reunion six years ago. He was the same guy that I always remembered -- the sense of humor, engaging conversation and many interests. I am very shocked to hear of his passing. -- Dave Compton, Denver.

Dear Dale and Adam, We were so sorry to hear about John. We have such fond memories of when the boys (Adam and Landon) were young and in Cub and Boy Scouts with John as their leader. We will always remember him for his dedication to the all kids in Scouts. He very generously gave me one of his autographed books which I will cherish. Please know to call us if there is anything we can do. You are both in our thoughts and prayers.
With Sympathy,
Mark, Lisa, Landon, and Haydon Modglin

Brother John:
I am sad beyond words at your passing. I remember when my baby brother came home with mom and dad. And all the adventures, growing up in VA and CO. And your many achievements as a prosecutor and, lately, an author. I wish you had more time to pursue your interests and to be with your family. God Bless you and all of our love to Dale and Adam.

I had the pleasure of knowing John since High School in Northglenn. His steadfast nature and deep love of books made him a wonderful man to spend time in discussion with . His passing leaves all who knew him with a heavy heart. Love to Dale and the family.

What a shock to learn of John's passing in this morning's Denver Post. I knew John from covering the federal courts and also from a shared interest in Western history. One would be hard-pressed to find a more decent and honorable person. God rest him. My deepest sympathy to his family.

John, we will all miss you buddy! You were a great and supportive fellow veteran and a big booster every year of our Toys for Tots drive. You were a great friend and American, for sure. Dale and Adam, may you be consoled somewhat in your grief by knowing what a great memory your husband and father left for us. God bless you both. Jim and Karen Boma

Dale,
So sorry to hear of the loss of John. He was a great human being and a very interesting chap to be around in so many ways.
My association with John predates our long involvement at the A.G.'s office and the Army Reserve. He was the youngest elected member of the Northglenn Home Rule Charter Commission in the late 1970's where I served as legal counsel.
I especially recall our trip to the Presidio and the weekend jaunt to the Sand Dunes with Harold Davison. John's sense of humor and love of history were second to none. He stands out as one the most memorable people connected to my life.
I will not attend the service but trust you will accept this tribute instead. My sincerest sympathy to you whom I also have memories fond memories of.
