John H. Jernigan, Sr.

Norfolk - John Henry Jernigan, Sr., 91, entered into rest on Monday, August 20, 2018, at the Hampton Veterans Administration Hospice/Palliative Care Center.

He was born in Dillion, SC, on September 5, 1926, to the late Lyde Miller Jernigan, Sr., and Lena Gainey Jernigan. A proud World War II Veteran, he served in the United States Navy for 26 years aboard many aircraft carriers and destroyers. Retiring with an honorable discharge, he then worked for Navy Public Works, Naval Air Station, Norfolk, for 15 years. He was an active member of Azalea Baptist Church and a 45 year Mason, Ocean View Lodge #335. He was an avid NASCAR fan (many race trips with his boys), enjoyed playing cards with the "Wheeler" sisters, and enjoyed many Shriners trips with them over the years as well.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wonderful wife of 49 years, Doris Christine Wheeler Jernigan, his beloved son and best friend, Ronald A. Jernigan; three brothers, Alton Jernigan, Lyde Jernigan, Jr., William A. Jernigan; and two sisters, Margaret Mabrey and Mildred Burke.

He is survived by two children, Denise Jernigan and John H. Jernigan, Jr., (Maria); daughter-in-law Marilyn Jernigan; family friends Sally Earl and Ben Hoelscher; four grandchildren - Jake (Michele), Meredith (Bobby), Lauren (T.J.) and Matthew; five great grandchildren, Easton, R.J., Ryan, Judah and Daniel; a sister, Clara Jackson of Atlanta; several nieces and nephews; and many great friends and neighbors.

Chapel service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 24, 2018, at the Tidewater Drive Chapel, 8464 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, VA. The family will receive friends at the at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at the Hampton VA Hospice Center for their exceptional care and compassion. Also thanks to the Azalea Baptist Church family for their many years of fellowship.
