John Joseph Tuohy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 15, 2023.

John Joseph (“Joe”) Tuohy, a longtime banker, civic leader and devout Catholic, died peacefully on October 15th, 2023, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His banking career started in the trust department at Merchants Bank in Indianapolis in the 1960s and ended with his retirement in 1990 as the CEO of the Citizen and Southern National Bank of Florida. He is survived by his children, Mimi (Mike) O’Leary and Phil (Jennifer) Tuohy and five grandchildren: Joe O’Leary (Taylor) , Mary Kathleen O’Leary, Jack O’Leary, Charlotte Tuohy and David Tuohy, and one great-granddaughter, Grace O’Leary. He is also survived by his sister, Bernadette Cunningham. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Virginia Koschnick Tuohy, and his brothers James L. Tuohy, Monsignor Francis R. Tuohy and Thomas E. Tuohy.

Joe was born on June 27, 1926  to the late Joseph K. Tuohy and Winifred (McMahon) Tuohy. His mother died when he was three, and he was reared by his father and his step-mother, Ann Tuohy. Joe loved sports and played football and basketball throughout his years at Little Flower Elementary school and Cathedral High School. He was the captain of the Cathedral basketball team his senior year. He was a strong student, excellent athlete and a hard worker, as he delivered newspapers throughout high school to pay the $50 annual tuition for Cathedral.

Joe enlisted in the Navy in 1944 (the week after he graduated from high school) and served overseas in World War II. He was sent to an officer's training course at the University of Pennsylvania, and he was there when the war ended. Through the GI Bill, he was able to earn a degree in Finance from the Wharton School of Business. While at Penn, he walked on to the basketball team where he stated he “earned splinters in his rear due to all of the sitting on the bench.”  But, he was on the team and made some lifelong friendships.

Joe loved banking and being a part of the civic community. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and named a Significant Sig in 1985. He was a Sagamore of the Wabash, a Knight of Malta, he chaired the board of trustees at Saint Mary’s College in the late 1980’s and chaired  the board of directors at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale in the 1990’s. He and Virginia were long-time members of Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis and Coral Ridge Country Club in Fort Lauderdale. He and Virginia lived in Sea Ranch Lakes, FL for 33 years and Joe served on various committees while living there. He was also a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Fort Lauderdale for 44 years.

Joe enjoyed meeting new friends, keeping up with the news of the world, watching Notre Dame football and singing.  His last activity on earth was watching Notre Dame beat USC - something that definitely raised his spirits. The family would like to thank his caregivers: Loleta, Doreen, Jocelyn and Tess along with Dr. John Limperis and Barney O’Neil for their amazing support.

Calling will be from 10:30-11:30 on Monday, Oct 23, 2023, at Saint Luke’s Catholic Church at 7575 Holliday Drive East, Indianapolis, IN with a Mass of Christian Burial immediately following the calling. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Cathedral High School or Little Flower Elementary School in Indianapolis.  There will be a celebration of Joe’s life held in Ft. Lauderdale at a later date and time.
