Waycross - John Henry "Jack" King, III, 76, died Thursday afternoon, February 20, 2003 at his residence after an extended illness. He was a lifelong resident of Waycross, son of the late John Henry King, Jr. and Sarah Singleton King. He was a graduate of Waycross High School, Davidson College and Emory University. He was an Army veteran of World War II. At the time of his death, he was Executive Director and Chairman of the Exodus House Charitable Trust, which he founded in 1990. He was the founder of Satilla Substance Abuse and the Hawthorne House in Argyle, GA. He served on the Board of Directors for Bridges of Hope. He served on the Governors Advisory Council under three Governors and was Southeastern Council Speaker. He received the first Federal Funds available for addiction Programs and began the first DUI School that was used as a pattern for many others. He assisted in the relocation of more than seven hundred Vietnamese and Cambodian children, helping them find homes in America. He was affiliated with the GACA, NACA, GARR, and GARDE. In 1979, he received the Morris Jacobson Brotherhood Award. Survivors: his wife, Barbara Lynn Ward King of Waycross; three sons, John Henry King IV of St. Marys, Dewayne King of Blackshear and Patrick King of Nashville, TN; four daughters, Charlotte Singleton King of Pittsburg, PA, Mary Marta Bordeau of New Orleans, LA, Gay King Darden of Waycross and Kanda King of Tifton; two sisters, Lorena King Miller of Waycross and Sally Dirkes of Murfreesboro, TN; his extended family, Van Vu of Baxley, Kim Vu, Long Vu, Dinh Vu, Qui Vu, and Phung Vu, all of Atlanta, Tinh Vu of San Francisco, CA and other relatives. Funeral Service: 4:00 p.m., Saturday, February 22, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church of Waycross. Burial: Oakland Cemetery. All residents of the Exodus House will serve as honorary pallbearers, they are requested to gather at the church at 3:30 PM Saturday. Remembrances: The family has requested that memorials be sent to the Exodus House Charitable Trust, 100 Plant Ave. Waycross, GA 31501.
