LAMPE , JOHN M., M.D. , 82 Passed away on January 14, 2007 at his home in Denver. The descendant of Colorado pioneers, he was born on June 4, 1924. He attended North High School, and the University of Colorado, where he graduated from medical school in 1949. He served his country in WWII, and as a battalion surgeon in Korea, during which time he received a Bronze Star for meritorious service. He had a private pediatric practice, followed by a long career with the Denver Public Schools, culminating in his appointment as Chief of Health and Social Services. He was also a clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado. He served on numerous boards, including working as a consultant to the President's committee on Health Education, wrote several health education books, and received many awards, including the American School Health Association Howe Award for outstanding service and the University of Colorado Silver and Gold Award. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, LaVerne Katherine Lampe, R.N., whom he met while serving at Fitzsimons Army Hospital, his daughter Kathleen Lampe and her husband Max Kahn, M.D, of Dobbs Ferry, NY, his son John and wife Rhonda of Denver, and his grandchildren Elizabeth and Will Kahn. He was preceded in death by his parents John William and Minna Berberig Lampe. He was a devoted husband and father with many loving relatives and lifelong friends who appreciated his creativity, kindness, and most of all his sense of humor, which was once described in a Denver Post article as "puckish". He was an accomplished storyteller who loved history and the Colorado outdoors. A memorial service will be held at First Plymouth Congregational Church, 3501 South Colorado Blvd. Englewood, CO at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 22, 2007. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Denver Public Schools Teacher's Club, 990 Glencoe Street, Denver, CO 80220 or The Lake County Public Library, 1115 Harrison Avenue, Leadville, CO 80461.

Dr. Lampe will be remembered for many outstanding contributions, including developing one of the finest school health programs in the nation for DPS in the 1980's. It was a privilege as well as a great pleasure to work with him on so many joint efforts and councils. His wisdom, advice, and sincere caring - and his delightful stories and twinkling sense of humor - will never be forgotten. My deepest condolences to all the family and the friends who will miss John so much. May he rest in peace.
