John LeBret Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 14 to Mar. 21, 2015.
John LeBret, 42, of Baton Rouge passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at Baton Rouge General Hospital surrounded by family and close friends. He taught in the Communication Studies Department at Louisiana State University where he also managed the HopKins Black Box Theatre. John was born in Yuma, Arizona, and spent his early years in Oregon and Washington. He attended college at East Washington University and lived in Seattle before he moved to Albany, NY, to finish his BA and earn his MA from SUNY Albany. He spent many years in upstate New York before moving to Louisiana to begin his career as a performance studies scholar. John earned his PhD from Louisiana State University in 2011. John directed, performed in, and collaborated on many extraordinary performances in the HopKins Black Box Theatre, hanging lights, painting, building, and keeping the space running efficiently for LSU students, faculty, and guest artists in residence. Recently, he developed a popular course called "Puppets and Props," designed to teach communication theories and philosophies via puppet manipulation. The course was featured on NBC33. John worked with many of these students to create, what would be, his final performance, On a Snowy Evening, which celebrated the winter/holiday season. He was an inspiring teacher and creative force whose legacy will endure in the hearts and minds of the LSU community. Two memorial services are being planned: one in the HopKins Black Box and another in John's home state, Washington. John is survived by his mother, Becky Spraitzar, of Oak Harbor, WA, father, Norman LeBret, of Loon Lake, Washington, and brothers Caleb LeBret of Anacortes, WA, and Zack LeBret of Seattle, WA, and many close friends and family.

I am very sad to learn of John's passing. I came to know him as a Spanish Town "landmom" to a string of wonderful Communications Studies folk dating back a decade. They all formed the most unique and interesting extended family of which he was an intricate part. He always reminded me of a sprite, glowing with that kind of magic light. My heart goes out to all of you who were and are a part of that family as well as to his mother and dad and brothers.

RIP John. Have a lot of good memories from high school. Debate class wouldn't have been the same without you.

John knew more about living life joyfully and lovingly than anyone I have ever known. I will always feel blessed to have you in my life, and I will love you always.

John was, in a word, awesome. I had an introduction to film class with him, and his love for the art came through in everything he did. But beyond being a great teacher, he was a great guy. Always willing to help us, challenge us, and offer words of support. Such a talented and amazing young guy. The Communications department won't be the same without him, but those he taught will continue his great work for many years to come.

John was always such a warm and welcoming soul to those around him, and I remember him fondly from when I was a new student in Oak Harbor and then continued friendship throughout high school. It's wonderful to read about all the lives he touched beyond. He will truly be missed but his spirit will shine on in those he knew and loved, and those who loved him. Rest well in God's arms, John. We will never forget you or your charms.

Just heard the terrible news of John's passing. My heart & prayers go out to all his family & friends. I'm sure that you all are proud of all his accomplishments & just being himself. I'm sure that God is drawn closer to us who mourn & that his plan for us will be sufficient to get us through these most trying times. God give you peace & tranquility during this time of a parents greatest loss, a son or daughter. Never feel alone, for i & many others are forced to take that journey. Together, we will see it through with everlasting love & the hope that we will be joined once again.

To John's family. he was a very special friend to our daughter. They went to Eastern together. We often saw him when she brought him home for the weekend. Even though they were not a couple-just incredibly good friends, we formed a bond with him. We send our love and prayers and blessings to you all his family. May you have the strength to get throu this. Alice and Carl Alexander

My prayers, love and special thoughts to John's family especially Becky and Caleb. Right from the "get go" John, you were such a vibrant caring soul. YOUR kindness and thoughtfulness shone over and over through out your middle school and high school years when there are so many challenges. You always had the best hat collection too. Then when you started teaching and later earned your doctorate at my alma mater across the country from where you were my student, pretty special. You were a remarkable young man, it was my privilege to be a small part of your life and you will not be forgotten. Our families have so many wonderful shared memories. John, I will continue to be there for and with your mom, my high school chum, so continue to help us stay out of trouble/mischief as you so often said you had too with your ear to ear smile. Big hugs.
