John LeGeros Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 3, 2024.
John Peter "Johnny" "Grandpa Johnny" LeGeros passed away on February 27, 2024, in Queens, NY, at the age of 95. He was born on April 13, 1928, in Brookings, South Dakota. John was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a cherished member of his community.

John, known for his kind and funny personality, was described as "chipper," jolly, and generous. He had a knack for being forgiving, silly, and thoughtful. His family fondly remembers him as a loving and old-fashioned individual who was always eager to help others. John's intelligence and creativity shone through his scientific and ingenious mind.

In his military career with the US Army in the 1940s-1960s, John served with honor and dedication. Following his military service, he pursued a successful career path. John was a professor at NYU and Cooper Union, a physicist for DuPont, and held roles at the United Nations Development Programme and United Nations Management and Review.

John's educational journey took him through primary school in Brookings, high school at Chattucks St. Mary's, and higher education at prestigious institutions like Northwestern, M.I.T., New York University, and the University of British Columbia-Vancouver.

A man of faith, John worshipped at Marble Collegiate Church and Trinity Reformed Church. He found solace and community in his religious practices.

In his leisure time, John indulged in his hobbies as an inventor, amateur magician, and hobbyist mechanic. He enjoyed playing tennis, trumpeting, singing in the car, and playing pranks on his loved ones.

John will be deeply missed by his children: Peter, Geo, Mary, Mark, Bernardo, David, Alessandra ("Sasha"), and Katherine ("Kara"), his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who knew him. He is preceded in death by his wife Racquel Zapanta LeGeros and his parents Peter and Katherine LeGeros.

A private family memorial will be planned for a future date to honor John's life. Contributions in his memory can be made to the American Cancer Society, Shriners Hospitals, ASPCA, UNICEF, or Doctors Without Borders.

The Gannon Funeral Home in New York, New York, is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements.

When I was a kid my dad helped me with my math and computer programming. In college he helped me with my term papers . I wrote them long hand and he had them typed . He also authored my college essays .
I traveled the Middle East because of him. Learned Arabic and was ultimately Christiansted in the Greek Orthodox church because of him.
He was my dad. We didn't always see eye to eye. But we loved each other. I will forever miss my Dad.

Dr. John was an amazing mentor to me during my time at NYU. Indeed, working in the LeGeros´ lab afforded me the opportunity to pursue a new career path. His and Racquel´s guidance and support were vital in my learning and development as a budding scientist, and I am thankful for their kindness and generosity during my initial years studying abroad in the US. Your memory will live on as this tree blossoms and grows. We will miss you.

I had the privilege to closely know and work with Dr John LeGeros on a daily basis for more than five years when I was at NYU. I even lived together with them in his and Dr Racquel LeGeros´ apartment for several months upon my arrival in NYC. He was such a kind and generous person, always welcoming me and always looking out for me. I have missed him and I will miss him even more.

A man's worth is measured by how he parents his children. And if that is true, John LeGeros has a worth in the billions! Every year when I'd bring my son to child birthday parties, I was able to not only learn from Dr. LeGaros but interact with his wonderful progeny. The lives of his children say what's best about him.

So many. Big John was the guy that always made you feel like you wanted to hug him. A warm and caring person the most gentle demeanor. A great and supportive father and husband. I´m so lucky to have been able to know him and won´t be able to ever watch "Up" without thinking of him the whole time. Thanks for everything Johnny!
