John Lindsey II Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 25, 2025.
John Dewel Lindsey II, of Tallahassee, FL passed away Monday, January 13, 2025. John was born on December 14, 1950, in Tarpon Springs, FL where he married his high school sweetheart, Debbie Cranford in 1971. They made their home in Tallahassee where he began his 40-year career as a postal employee. John was a proud post office worker and active member and officer of the American Postal

Workers Union, representing his coworkers in negotiations. He especially enjoyed getting to know customers, training new clerks on the window, and decorating his sites for Christmas holidays, usually wearing a Santa hat!

John was a reservist in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1970 to 1977. After his service, he could often be seen proudly wearing a Marine Corps hat. As his memory decreased, people, noticing his hat, often thanked him for his service and spoke to him about his experience in the Marine Corps. He was delighted and proud every time. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Tallahassee.

John was extremely proud of his two sons, Dewel and Jesse, who kept him busy with fun and exciting activities. He was a leader in the YMCA Indian Guides and a leader in Cub Scout Pack 112. As his sons aged he became leader and Scoutmaster in Boy Scout Troop 117, which he re-established in 1993. There he helped lead 20 young men to obtain their Eagle Scout rank. The many camping trips, backpacking hikes, and other scouting activities kept his scouts enthusiastic. Snow skiing, swimming with manatees, and river rafting were enjoyed by all. Twice he led his boy scouts on multi-week Philmont High Adventure backpacking trips in New Mexico.

John was also very active as a Little League Baseball Coach at Myers Park and Capitol Park. When Jesse wrestled at Lincoln High School, he always traveled with the team, never missing a match, even accompanying Jesse to the National Wrestling Tournament in Fargo, ND.

John was a loyal FSU football fan and attended games for 30 years. Animals were always an important part of John's life with many dogs and cats as his special pets. He was a very active member of Tallahassee Dog Obedience Club, acting as a trainer, President, and Training Director. He and Debbie showed their cocker spaniels in Obedience, Tracking, and Field Trial work, traveling often, before their sons were born. John earned several degrees on his cocker spaniels: Galadriel, Bear, and Galahad.

John's parents, John and Jeannette Lindsey, of Ozona, FL preceded him in death, along with his brother, James Dewey. He is survived by his wife, Debbie, his sons, John Dewel (Candace) and Jesse Daniel (Renee), grandsons Penn Martin, Connor Maddox, and Charles Hawthorne, all of Tallahassee, his sister Linda Turnbull (Marty) of Hudson, FL, his niece, April Dawn Bayer (Joe). His many cousins, nieces, and nephews will miss him and his sense of humor.

A private family burial will be held at Memory Gardens in Tallahassee.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Project of Tallahassee at 301 East Tharpe St, Tallahassee, Fl 32303.

I am one of John's nephews through his marriage to Debbie. We lived in Albany, Ga., while they lived in Tallahassee, Fl., but they used to visit often. As we got older, John found out that we were reading sci-fi and fantasy books. John brought us, what I would assume was most of his paperback book collection. We read every one, and there must have been one hundred. He, not really realizing, made a big impression on myself and my brothers. We loved John and are so sorry for his loss.

I will always remember his cheeky jokes and infectious smile. I am grateful to have been part of his doctors office family for nearly 15 years. Debbie, you and the kids are in my thoughts. Miss you all!
