LOGAN
RT. REV. JOHN MICHAEL LOGAN, O.Praem, J.C.L., on Friday, February 8, 2008, succumbed after a brave battle with cancer. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Priory, Middletown, DE.
The son of the late John and Josephine Meehan Logan, Abbot Logan was born on January 13, 1935 and raised in West Phila. He was graduated from St. Joseph Preparatory School and attended St. Joseph College before entering the novitiate of the Norbertine Order at Daylesford, PA. After novitiate, Abbot Logan completed undergraduate studies at St. Norbert College, DePere, WI, graduating with honors in philosophy. Theological studies at St. Norbert Abbey concluded with solemn profession as a Canon Regular of Premontre on August 28, 1959 and ordination to the priesthood on June 18, 1960. Masters degrees in classical languages and political science followed, during which time the Abbot taught at Abbot Pennings High School, DePere, WI, Archmere Academy, Claymont DE and Bishop Neumann High School, Phila., PA. Abbot Logan then received a licentiate in canon law from the Catholic University of America, working close to fifteen years thereafter in the Chancery of the Diocese of Wilmington, holding a number of offices in its Marriage Tribunal.
In January, 1989, he was elected Abbot (the major religious superior) of Daylesford Abbey, Paoli, PA. His election came at a critical juncture in the life of that community. His uncompromising integrity and fidelity to the discipline of religious life forged a vibrant and dynamic canonry with active liturgical and educational apostolates.
The years following his reign as Abbot saw the establishment of a new Norbertine Canonry at Immaculate Conception Priory in Delaware, of which he was a founder. Recent years saw the Abbot working in various capaci-ties in the Diocesan Chanceries of Fort Wayne, Wheeling-Charleston and Camden.
The Abbot was a man of genuine goodness, quiet generosity, great intellect, bright humor and complete honesty. He was also unapologetically the New York Yankees' most ardent fan. While he will be remembered for these worthy attributes, he will be remembered best for the mark he made on religious life. He was a courageous leader, a loyal friend and a model priest.
Abbot Logan is survived by his community at Immaculate Conception and by his brothers Joseph (Dolores), Thomas (Elizabeth) and James Logan, as well as by nieces, nephews and friends who loved him and were proud to know him. Rev. Clergy, Religious, Family and Friends invited to his Viewing Thursday 10 A.M. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 3rd and Wolf Sts. Funeral Mass 11 A.M. Entombment Holy Cross Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be sent to Immaculate Conception Priory, 1296 Bayview Road, Middletown, DE 19709.

My sincere condolences to the family and community of Abbot Logan. We were Novitiate classmates in 1955-1956 where we became friends. John was a very complex character with very clear likes and dislikes. He had his share of good and bad times in his life. May he rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to Father Logan's family and friends. Father Logan was the officiant at my wedding in 1975 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and for that I will be eternally grateful. We also considered him a close family friend. He frequently sat in my aunt's kitchen with my mother and aunts to share coffee and a few laughs. He truly was a special man. Please know that you are all in my prayers.

I wish to extend my sympathy to the family of Father John. He was a Fine Priest, Good Friend and a Great Irishman. He touched many lives on his journey through this life and I am sure he will be rewarded in the next.

Father Logan was considered our family priest. I am one of four siblings and he married all of us and baptized all of our children. He had the best sermons! He met our family during his years at Archmere Academy in Delaware. In the early days I remember him cheering on the Green Bay Packers while sitting with our father in our living room. Father Logan was a respected gentle giant of wisdom and religious knowledge. The Walker Family expresses their sincere condolences on his passing.

I will never forget Fr. Logan. He was my teacher at Bishop Neumann and became a great friend. He married my wife and I and baptized both of my children. He also baptized my niece/god child.

My daughter is extremely upset as she intened to ask him to marry her.

He was a very good friend to my father before his passing. He was a member of our family and will never leave our hearts.

Hard to believe our Abbot Logan succumbed to a battle, he was such a fighter. We were sure he would live much longer. Our only consolation is that he is with his maker and recieving his eternal reward. May God grant to him the same kindness he showed to his brother Norbertines. He will certainly be remembered for the mark he made on religious life; Daylesford Abbey is definitively more united, vibrant, and dynamic than it was the day of his election. I can personally testify to his quiet generosity, but it will be his bright humor and genuine goodness that I will miss the most.
May the community he founded in Delaware take great consolation and hope in the Abbot's Coat of Arms, "God is Mercy."

Father Logan was an instrumental part of my family growing up in South Philadelphia. During his years at Bishop Newman High School,he taught 2 of my 4 brothers, and spent many evenings at our home.
He married my sister and my brother. He baptized my nephew and memoralized my father when he died suddenly in 1987. My family has many fond memories of him. I would like to offer my sincerest sympathy to his family and friends. He spent his lifetime serving the community and mentoring so many young lives . I feel fortunate to have known him as a child and as a young adult. I know he is in heaven and is reaping the benefits of the lives he touched and made a difference in.

I was saddened to read of the passing of Father John Logan. Father Logan performed the marriage ceremony for my husband and me, 37 year ago. I thought so highly of him and I was thrilled when he agreed to perform the ceremony. He also honored us by performing the baptismal rite for our son. Father Logan was honorable and honored, humble and humbling, inspired and inspiring. Not many men attain what Father Logan had, the respect, love and admiration of many. He was the credit to his family, his community, and especially his religion. Many will sorely miss him.
