Dr. John A. Lupas

DR. JOHN A. LUPAS, 83 Dr. John Albert “Jack” Lupas passed from this earth on December 26, 2015 after struggling from the effects of Alzheimer’s at the age of 83. Dr. Lupas was born on May 13, 1932 in Washington D.C., son of the late Anthony J. and Anice (Whitely) Lupas. Dr. Lupas graduated from Wilkes College in 1954, and then attended graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh. Working in the Bacteriology Department, he assisted in the work supporting the development of Dr. Jonas Salk’s Polio Vaccine, one of the greatest medical advancements of the 20th century. This work inspired Dr. Lupas to attend medical school at Hahnemann in Philadelphia where he graduated in 1959. He then interned at D. C. General Hospital in Washington. In lieu of military service during the Korean War, Dr. Lupas worked at Ft. Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma in the Public Health Service. He was the Chief of Pediatric and General Medicine at the Oklahoma Indian Hospital until 1962. He returned to the Philadelphia area to complete his Residency at Saint Christopher’s Hospital for Children before moving to Pottstown in 1964. Dr. Lupas was a loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather, and a fixture in the Pottstown area medical community for many years. He came to Pottstown in 1964 to start his Pediatric practice which then grew into Coventry Family Practice. He treated many multi-generational families for over 40 years. He was also known to make house calls into his 70’s. Dr. Lupas’ family practice grew to one of the largest in the area, and eventually was sold to Pottstown Memorial Medical Center. He served at PMMC and other area hospitals in addition to his 25 years of service as Medical Director at Manatawny Manor Nursing Home. He also served at the Frederick Mennonite Home and as the school Physician at The Hill School for many years. Throughout all of these years of service, he was known for his kind heart and brilliant ability to diagnose rare illnesses. In his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf, travelling with his wife, Judy whom he loved dearly, writing poetry, and playing his harmonica in a band. He also commiserated for years cheering for the Eagles and the Phillies, the only disease he could never diagnose. He was preceded in death by his brother, Anthony J. Lupas Jr. He is survived by his wife, Judy A. Hanson; his children, Anice Keenan Jones of Marietta, Ga.; Jack Lupas of Kennesaw, Ga.; Sam Lupas of Cashiers, N.C.; Laura Henkel of Berlin , N.J., and Adam Glasgow of Douglasville, Ga., and 11 adoring grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Diane Bartoli of Sarasota, Florida. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, January 2, 2016 with Memorial Services to follow, at First United Methodist Church, at 414 E. High St. in Pottstown.
