Gone ,
But Never Forgotten
It's been 1 year since your passing and you're missed daily.
One year ago today, John Angus MacDonald was called home to be with the Lord. He was surrounded by his loving family at home , while Hospice was present. John was only diagnosed less than 3 months earlier with Lou Gehrig's disease. It was a difficult time , but he was happy to be living at a new place with his wife Myrna, Joyce, MacDonald. The two of them met when they were both teenagers.
On November 25th, 1941 John was the first born to Betty Anne Rockwell and Robert Crosby MacDonald in Los Angeles California. He grew up with his sister Ellen in L.A. County and Orange County most of his younger life. He loved the beach and would also paddle around Balboa Island with his cousin for fun. They would take the bus to downtown Los Angeles to enjoy extra time at the farmers markets and occasionally attend the Hollywood Bowl for live music.
At the age of 15 he met the Love of his Life , Myrna, Joyce, Kirker. She and her sisters were walking around and Joyce no shoes to cross a field, which had thorns. John carried her across the field to her parents house. He said when he met her , "He knew she was the one". John joined the Army at the age of 17 in 1959. He served time in Germany until 1961 when he returned home and married Joyce in October 1961. They moved to Paso Robles while John finished his time in the Army. In 1964 Joyce gave birth to their first born, Robert and again to their second son Shawn in 1966. John loved taking his family to the beach and camping. They camped from Yellowstone to Yosemite National Park, amongst many others on the West Coast.
John spent most of his careers in service and sales . He worked at Lion Country Safari for short time,in his 20s , taking care of the animals. He trained as a veterinarian assistant because he loved animals so much. Though it didn't last long , his love for animals never faded. They always had cats and sometimes more than 1 or 2 dogs. Some of his favorite cats were Marx Marvelous, Pie-Wachet , Crono and Fluffy . His favorite dogs were Thor, Peace , Joker and ND ,)
He sold cars and motor homes in California before moving to Lake Tahoe for the first time. He worked at Winchels Donuts as a baker till he took position as Manager in Longview, Washington. 2 years later he moved back to Lake Tahoe for a short time before moving back to Orange County, California. He and his family lived in Mission Viejo and San Juan Capistrano. He and Joyce raised their two boys there until moving back to Lake Tahoe for the 3rd time in 1978. He worked as a Department manager at Kirkwood Ski Resort. The fresh air and outdoors was something he always enjoyed, from either the beaches to the Mountains. In 1981 John and his family moved to Washington State where he sold waterbeds before going back to car sales. He sold cars at Tacoma Subaru in the 80s with his Son Robert for a while. His wife sold cars for many years , as they all did for 20 years, plus. John finally retired in Puyallup, Washington in 2010.
In his spare time, John truly enjoyed working in his gardens of vegetables and flowers. He loved planting flowers and making his yards look beautiful. He also loved planting vegetables and herbs he could cook up when he wanted , for his family to enjoy.
John was a funny, charismatic, quick witted individual. He was a caring person, with a lot of character. He would sometimes take care of friends who needed it, if they needed food or a place to stay for a few days. Most people who met him appreciated his straight forward ways and they way he treated people them the same. If you were good to him and his family , then you were alright by him. He enjoyed reading books and having long discussions about philosophy and politics.
Later in life , John struggled some still, for he never truly got over losing his parents at the age of 5. He and his sister Ellen were raised by their Grandmother Gaynell on their mothers side of the family. Her and Nick Moretta raised them both until adulthood. John was presented with the possibility in his 60s that he was perhaps the true Son of Howard Hughes Jr. This was something that had been suggested to him as a child, but he Never made the connection.. His family was closely connected to Howard growing up, because Archie MacDonald, John's grandfather, was the Manager of The Howard Hughes Tool Co. for a while, but lost time once his parents died. If you look up the" Real Son of Howard Hughes" on the internet, you will see John's face as a spitting image to Howard at about the same age . With John's passing , we will never know for sure , but He Now Knows for sure who his father is.
John loved God and his Favorite verse was the Lord's Prayer . He would always say , Live, Laugh and Love. He Most enjoyed time with family , but also with friends. He liked Good Food, Good Friends, Good Music and Fine Wine ?? Cooking a delicious meal for his friends and family was something he also enjoyed doing.
John is preceeded in death by his parents and Survived by his Wife Joyce and two sons , Robert and Shawn. He is also Survived by his Sister Ellen, who still lives in California and Granddaughter Tayler Joy who lives in Washington State.
Though his struggle was short , we appreciate that we got to tell him how much he was Loved before he passed and spend precious time together. May the Lord continue to Bless you in Heaven and Always
AMEN
