John MacQuade Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 23 to Oct. 24, 2008.
SANDWICH — John MacQuade, 65, of Sandwich, passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 20, 2008. Born in Hyannis, he was the son of the late A. John and Rita MacQuade of Sandwich. He was a native of Sandwich who attended the Henry T. Wing School and graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy with a B.S. in Nautical Science. John played soccer throughout his life, including while at Massachusetts Maritime Academy and continued to coach youth soccer.

He held a master's license in the Merchant Marine for all U.S. flagged merchant vessels and sailed worldwide for over 30 years with companies that included United Fruit Co., Boston Ocean Carriers, ARCO, and American Trading. John held a Coast Guard license and was a first class pilot for Prince William Sound in Alaska. While serving as captain of the Baltimore Trader, he received a letter of commendation from the Coast Guard for rescuing six people from an overturned fishing vessel in the Pacific Ocean in 1986. As captain, he also led the maiden voyage on the USS ARCO Fairbanks super tanker. After retirement from the Merchant Marine, he served as port captain for International Marine Consultants and served as security officer at The Ridge Club and Thirwood Place.

John was a lifetime member of the Boston Marine Society. He served as associate professor of Marine Transportation as well as the navigator for the U.S. Training Ship Bay State at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. He was also a member of the Sandwich Lions Club and a devoted parishioner at Corpus Christi Parish. He loved to spend time with family and friends and enjoyed spending time at the Cape Cod Canal. John was a dedicated husband and loving father who strongly supported his three sons' avid hockey, baseball and soccer schedules and was extremely proud of them.

John is survived by his wife, Sandra (McDonnell) MacQuade; three sons, Darren of Boston, Brian of Boston, and John and his wife, Christine, of Chicago; grandson, Colin; sisters, Nancy Fumagalli of Italy and Sheila James of California; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 24, 2008, in the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich, MA 02563. A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at 10 a.m., at Corpus Christi Parish, 324 Quaker Meeting House Road, East Sandwich, MA 02537

In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to the American Liver Foundation, 75 Maiden Lane, Suite 603, New York, NY 10038.

To Nancy, Sheila, Sandy & "Jackie's" children and family:
I'm so sorry I did not hear about this in time to see you on Friday. Nancy & Sheila, it was only about a month or so ago that we were sitting on Fran's porch talking about the old times. It's hard to lose a member of the "extended family" the Sandwich we grew up in used to be. Much love to all of you in this difficult time.

I was deeply saddened by the news of Jack's passing and wish to extend my deepest sympathies to you, Sandy and to your sons and also to Nancy and Sheila at this time. Jack was always the gentleman - a great competitor and friend - seems we were just chatting at "the SHS 50" years celebration.

Mrs. MacQuade & Family,

My family and I would like to express our deepest sympathy. Jack was a terrific guy. I used to talk to him all the time at the various sporting events around town. He was all about his boys. My son, Jimmy, went to school with Darren. Jack reminded me of the late Barry Jenkins in many ways. Both were terrific men and fathers. May he rest in peace.
