From the moment I met John I knew he would be a special addition to the Inspired Leadership Initiative at Notre Dame. His wisdom, infectious smile, energy and sense of purpose were so valued. He will be greatly missed.

I've known John since we sat next to each other taking the entrance exam to get
into Fenwick High School. A truly good guy. RIP old friend.

What a perfect picture of your dad! Truly captures him. What a joy he was. Happily employing countless "kids" over the Summers, mine included. Always sharing a kind and funny story of my dad to my kids when he'd see them at school or work or in the hood. Such a gentleman and mentor. With a contagious smile and personality. I'm so sorry for you guys, but how lucky are you to have him as Dad.

John was a loving and generous man, and he made great contributions to the first class of the Inspired Leadership Initiative at Notre Dame. He was always so thoughtful of others. He loved life, loved his wife and loved his friends. We will miss him. Fr. Dan Groody, csc

I first met John in Notre Dame´s stadium when I was 7 or 8 months pregnant with our first child. I had been forewarned about John´s sense of humor, so when John asked me when our baby was due I looked him right in the eye and said "what baby?" As he stuttered and stammered I kept a straight face & finally burst out laughing. He started laughing and said "you really got me, didn´t you!" We laughed about this over the years. His laugh and sense of fun were legendary. He will be missed.

It is difficult to loose your Dad but you have many happy memories. Your Mother was waiting at the door to Heaven to greet him with God. Mary Beardsley

What a kind and humorous man! My spirits were always uplifted around "Mr. Madden." He had such a great smile. A good joke on hand. Always, an interest in what I was up to. (And, he hired me for a summer!)
One of the great lines I remember relates to his usual trick in the Turkey Bowl. He called the old guys "Crafty old veterans," and he lived up to the name. When the kids were up "5 touchdowns to 1" he would announce, just about the time to devour the delicious egg dish Mrs. Malloy made, and as the "crafty old veterans" were nearing the goal line, "Next score wins." And, voila.
