John Maganas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 3 to Apr. 11, 2023.
John Maganas of Malvern, PA, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2023.

He was born on September 2, 1927, in Jersey City, NJ, one of three children born to Greek immigrants. John grew up in White Plains, NY. He attended the University of Alabama and played football for the Crimson Tide's football team for one year before transferring to the University of Bridgeport, where he graduated. John married Dorothy Kilburn in 1955 and later moved to Malvern, PA.

Early in his career, John was a credit manager for Sears Roebuck and later a sales manager in the grocery industry. John had a successful career in sales for several of the leading food brokerage organizations in the greater Philadelphia area, including Bonstedt Coale, Hagerty Sales, and the Joseph W. Riley Co. In the early 1980s, John ventured out independently, forming J. Maganas Sales, a firm that called on customers in the tri-state area of Philadelphia until retiring in 1997. Most of all, John enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling with his wife Dorothy.

He and Dorothy were married for 68 years. John is survived by his wife, his five children, four sons, and their spouses, John K. and Jane of Malvern, PA; Stephen and Gisela of Phoenixville, PA; Christopher and Nicole of West Chester, PA; Thomas and Wendy of York, PA, and his daughter Mary Ann and her husband, Tripp Freeman of Darien, CT, six grandchildren: John and Peter Maganas, of Malvern, PA; Xena and Luke Maganas, of West Chester, PA and, Matthew and Iain Freeman of Darien, CT, and two great-grandchildren, Hadley, and Jack of Malvern, PA, to whom he was known as "Poppi." He was predeceased by his brother Tom Maganas of Manhattan Beach, CA, and his sister Alice Ross of Stratford, CT.

John had a talent for designing and building additions to homes; he loved golf, he loved the beach, and spending time with his grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Malvern, PA, with a private burial at Great Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetary.
