John Walter Maher
January 1, 1944 – January 2, 2018
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the family has to tell you that John Maher, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend left us to be with his Creator in the early morning hours of Monday, January 2, 2018. After a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer he passed away in his own home with his loving family by his side. John was the second eldest child born to the late Nicolas and Mary Maher. He was born on January 1, 1944 and lived and went to school in the Aberdeen district. After graduating high school he moved to Ontario for a couple of years returning to Saskatchewan where he met and married Irene Bashuk on July 20, 1968. He spent the majority of his working career with Shelley Western and was forced into retirement in his early 50's due to health reasons. John was predeceased by his: parents Nicolas and Mary Maher, brother Lawrence and sister-in- law Mollie, in-laws John and Mary Bashuk, sister-in-law Phyllis Fraser, brothers-in-law Nick Bashuk and Don Fraser. He also was predeceased by his favorite Auntie and Uncle, Bill and Jean Turchenek. Left to mourn his passing is his loving wife of nearly 50 years Irene, his daughter Lori (Tony) Hansen and his precious grandson Tanner who called him 'papa', his son Curtis, his brother Ed (Diana), sister Ann Kazakoff (Dave O'Brian); his auntie Ann Boyenko and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Special thanks to Dr. Julie Stakiw and Amanda at the Cancer Centre, Palliative care nurses and home care staff whom helped make John's final days comfortable in his own home. The Divine Liturgy will be held on Tuesday January 9, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. from the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. George, 210 Avenue M South, Saskatoon with Rt. Rev. Fr. Janko Kolosnjaji celebrant. Interment to follow in Woodlawn Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. George's Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral.
