In memory of
Ron Abercrombie
June 17, 2011
When I came to Emory nearly thirty years ago, John Manning was already an established senior faculty member of the Physiology Department. I vividly remember his friendliness and generosity towards me. He gave me some of the best advice I ever received about teaching medical students: “after you think you know what you want to say, write this down in longhand exactly as you’ll say it. Then tear it up before going into the lecture hall, and proceed without notes.” John was an excellent lecturer himself, so I followed his advice from then on.
With some of my colleagues, I was able to have a wonderful visit with John at the care facility in Covington, GA, only two months before his death, a memory I shall always treasure and be grateful for. His family should know that he was a beloved and treasured colleague of many of us at Emory.

I knew John decades ago when the family (and we all) were young. His commitment to his family were as obvious and as full as his desire for knowledge.
I remember one time in the more recent past when I was invited to his house to share in the sacksful of Gulf oysters; not being one who appreciated such, I was still welcomed into the enjoyable circle of family and friends.
My prayers continue to be with you, John's family. May he rest in God's peace

Dear Manning Family,
Please hold close the love and lessons your dear father leaves each of you.
I so well remember the good times in your basement as a child, acting up, and acting out as any young child would. What great memories those days were. Those times stay with me, even today. I also recall the complete willingness of your mother and father to act as my own parent, always for the good of me and my own brothers and sisters, as opportunities for learning came about.
I also am sure the early days of IHM's growth began in a most positive way, with many ideas originating from your father and mother, around your very own kitchen table at Council Bluff. What a beautiful and lasting legacy this is.
With sincere sympathy and prayers to each of you.
