Johnny Marx. Class act. Shocking news to read after wondering how his life had been. He was a kind and brilliant med student when we met at Stanford. He would gave been pleased to know I became a nurse. When I run the NYC marathon November 2 I will run through the Bronx with a smile for a brave friend from long ago.

To the family, my prayers are with you always.

Dr. Marx, it will soon be a year since you have been gone and it still feels unreal. I look at your picture everyday on the wall of the office and I smile because I was one of the lucky ones whose path you crossed. Thank you so much for being a part of my life. You will never be forgotten and always loved.

I just read an article on uptodate, a medical reference website, that acknowledged his many contributions. It sounds like he left the world a better place. May you rest in peace Dr. Marx and may God give your family strength.

Dr. Marx assisted our firm as an expert witness on several occasions. We always knew that he would be honest and fair in his opinions and would educate us about the medicine in the case. I trusted his opinions and respected him both as a gentleman and as a physician. The world is poorer without him.

Words can not express how deeply saddened I am for your loss. I did research with Dr. Marx in the late 80's, and had the great honor of having him hood me when I graduated from medical school. John Marx was one of the most amazing role models anyone could have ever dreamed of knowing. He impacted my life tremendously, and I was sure at some point our paths would cross again. The world has lost a truly special person, and my deepest and heartfelt sympathy goes to his family.

Wow, what a truly amazing man that brought an awesome warm presence wherever he went. At any moment working with him in the ER he would tell a random but funny joke which at first I wouldn't have expected him or when some funky music was playing in diagnostics he would throw down some dance moves that would just make you laugh. He was so welcoming and willing to answer questions about anything and never once acted superior or made one feel stupid, always kind, even on the craziest night at CMC. I learned a lot by just watching this man work and how he treats others. Hopefully one day a part of Dr. Marx will be shown to the patients that I see. Thanks Dr. Marx, you will be missed.

I just learned of Dr Marx's death today. I had a phone call with him on June 29 and he apparently died 2 days later. I am truly shocked by the news and extend by condolences to his family. I only met him in person once when I presented him for a deposition in a mater with an obnoxious opponent who tried to get Dr Marx to lose his temper by treating him poorly. Dr Marx was a perefect gentlemen and answered the questioners questions straight forward never once being impolite or rude. What a devastating loss for the medical world and for his family. A giant in Emergency Medicine. May he rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy to the Marx family. I met Dr. Marx in the fall of 1999. I learned that in addition to an esteemed physician, he was a hero in the truest sense of the word. I am certain his compassion, intelligence and sense of humor will be missed by everyone whose life he touched.

Dr. Marx took care of my young son at the CMC ER over ten years ago. He treated us with such kindness and compassion. I remember how amazed I was to learn that such an approachable, patient man was the head of emergency medicine. That one encounter left such a positive lasting impression. I am sad to hear of his passing.

Dear John Marx family
Your husband and father started out as an emergency medicine physician I hired as an expert in a case because of his impressive credentials. As I discussed medicine and the law with him, he became not just a physician I worked with but a good friend who always spoke so lovingly about each of you. I felt like I knew the entire Marx family as he knew all about my husband, a retired ER doctor and my children. No one knows better than all of you how busy he was , yet he always made time for everyone. 3 weeks ago, John had my son, a 3rd year medical student , come to Charlotte to meet with him about his residency aspirations. The impact John had on my son's life in those 2 hours is immeasurable. His unselfishness was unparalleled. I will treasure the wonderful things he said in his email about my son. I will miss his sense of humor. My family is praying for all of you and we send our deepest sympathy.

Dr Marx was the warmest and most sincere person I have ever met. He calmed my new parent fears when my son Jason was a patient. He always had time to listen and teach. He always treated Nurses with respect and valued our opinion. My family extends our prayers to his family. God Bless you John. We will miss you

What a shocking and immeasurable loss to not only emergency medicine but to all those fortunate enough to have known him. John had an impact not only on the generations of physicians he mentored and trained, but also the literally millions of patients they have cared for. What a legacy.

He was a colleague whom I greatly admired during our years together at Carolinas Medical Center. He was a friend who went out of his way to "teach me the ropes" when I became Chairman of Pediatrics in1994. He was revered by the Emergency Medicine residents who rotated through my dept. and went on to achieve great things in this field. We will miss him.

Oh, dear - what a shocking surprise. I just marveled two weeks ago at John's enthusiasm for teaching the rest of us Emergency Medicine, after all these years. I knew him when I was the ED director for CMC Mercy and CMC Pineville and have connected very briefly with him from time to time at conferences. He was always warm and gracious and I even got a hug in Florida...I now send one back to his family, his ED family and all those whose lives he touched - what a huge legacy!

I met Dr. Marx while coordinating the Academic Internship Program with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. He treated the high school students with respect and always made time for their questions. He would take them on tours of the Emergency Departments and arranged for them to met with the MedCenter Air personnel and see the medical helicopters first hand. During our last meeting with Dr. Marx an EMT from Medic stopped me. She was one of my former students and she told me she made her decision about becoming an EMT after her tour with Dr. Marx during her senior year in high school. His influence was felt throughout the entire medical community but he recognized the importance of taking time to meet with teenagers who were just beginning to make career choices.

His family, friends and colleagues are in my thoughts and prayers.

John was the Best, brilliant and humble. We used to meet once a month for breakfast at a diner on broadway in the early 80's. This was right after his graveyard shift at Denver General. He used to call it the knife and gun club. The stories he would tell. We were both just starting our careers and families. I saw him last just before he moved to North Carolina, I think 1992. There doesn't get anyone better than John and I was privaliged to have known him. My heart goes out to his family.

Hi All, John was brilliant, a teacher, a scholar and most of all a friend. I took great pride in knowing him, working with him as a colleague at DG and most of all having the opportunity on many occasions to make John laugh while at work through which I had the joy to view his genuine and larger than life smile. We all know John's academic achievements, his clinical prowess, but the best of John despite the former was his ability to be a real guy and lifetime friend!
God Bless!  Jimbo...

Dear Karin and all members of the John's family,
My prayers are with all of you during this most difficult time.
I had the privilege of knowing John before his rise to eminence
In our specialty. He was the youngest and brightest in our class.
We were fortunate to be Peter's first Denver class. John and I
Remained close friends . I am grateful for his presence in my life.
John had me laughing throughout our times together. I knew him as a close friend who cared deeply and spoke much about his family. He was a caring and considerate person who never forgot
Where he came from. Countless of lives were touched by his empathy and love. Johnny was his name as the kid in our class.
He was fortunate to leave his mark and sing his song before he left us all. That is how he continues to live within our hearts. I will miss my good friend and confidant but a part of me carries his essence. That indeed becomes the mark of a true friend. Always wanting to catch up on our personal lives in a most compassionate way. This was John the man as humble as he was great in his profession! May God bless all of you.
