Jack and I were good pals for much of our junior high and high school years. We lived just a few doors apart on Premiere Street in Bellflower. Actually, with Jim Brennan down the street we were often a "trio."
We three first met when we were paperboys working for Jack's Mom, who was the Press-Telegram area manager. We'd get free tickets to the Long Beach Plunge for "starts." Have paper folding contests. --"Boxing" the thin Saturday paper was always a fun competition. We played a lot of touch football on Jack's front lawn. We three went out for football our freshman year. Jack lettered as a "manager" as he broke his wrist on a blocking dummy. We ditched school our senior year a few times to watch MLB spring training. (--and got caught!) We went to car shows, usually thanks to Jack's dad supplying the free admission. We attended one show where the Corvette was first unveiled. I remember push-starting Jack's old '39 Studebaker practically every morning before school.
Later on in high school we spent many afternoons laying under a big tree in my front yard talking about the pros-and-cons of enlisting in the service. Shortly after HS graduation we all three went into the army within a few weeks of each other for a 3-year hitch . After basic and schooling Jack went to Hawaii, I went to West Germany, and Jim to Alaska, then New Mexico. We corresponded frequently. I gather, although Jack may have loved Hawaii, he did not really enjoy his army experience there. I believe he was a company clerk at Schofield Barracks.
After our service tour (Summer of '57) we reconnected for a while. But all three of us were in school taking full class-loads and working full time so we did not have much contact. Jack and I crossed paths graduation day June, '61 at LBSC. Jim graduated a year later from Cal Poly, SLO. The years went by, all three of us married and had families (Jim had no children.) Jim passed away in 2001 at age 65, of prostrate cancer. About 10 years ago Jack and I got together for breakfast and a tour of the old Bellflower neighborhood. We followed-up since with a few emails.
So, goodbye old pal for now. Thanks for being such a good friend. May you rest in peace. Don Deeley

These pulled at the heartstrings and are among our fondest memories of Jack and family to share.

I worked for John in the Admin Special Services unit at LA County Medical Center. He was a kind, approachable manager.
