John R. Metzner, Jr.

John Richard Metzner, Jr., of Ft. Collins, CO passed away peacefully Friday, July 8, 2016. He was 79.

John was the son of John and Anna (Robb) Metzner and the brother of Lucille Metzner. John married Louise (Hamlin) Metzner in Wheeling, WV, in 1961. He was the proud father of Mark, Craig, Karl and Rachel (Bell) and a doting grandfather of 12 (Bailey, Aaron, Madison, Max, Lauren, Sophia, Olivia, Gavin, Dashiell, Nathan, Anna (Bell), Noah (Bell)). John is preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

He attended Bethel Park High School in Pittsburgh, PA, graduated from Bethany College, Bethany, WV, and received his doctorate from Penn State University, State College, PA.

John taught mathematics and computer science at the University of Missouri-Rolla until 1988, transitioning to Hewlett-Packard in Ft. Collins, CO until his retirement. He then consulted for the State of Colorado Agriculture Department for Y2K and thereafter with Woodward Governor.

A career-long member and former executive board member of the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM), John traveled the United States and Europe judging computing competitions and attending conferences.

John was a member of the First United Methodist Church in both Rolla, MO, and Ft. Collins, CO, where he was a member of the Samaritan Class.

He had a lifelong passion with card games and puzzles of all kinds. He also loved to play pool ('The Applied Physics Lab') and creating smart and decorative woodworking projects for his children and grandchildren.

Services for John R. Metzner, Jr, will be held Monday July 18, 2016 at 10am at the First United Methodist Church in Ft. Collins, CO. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to Habitat For Humanity (www.habitat.org).
