John MICALLEF Obituary

MICALLEF _ Dr. John passed away unexpectedly on October 6, 2003 at 1:10 am in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Dr. Micallef was born in Victoria, Gozo, Malta on June 19, 1923 to Dr. Joseph and Melita (nee Cauchi) Micallef (tal barkuna). He was educated at the Lyceum in Valletta, Malta. He received a B.A. (Honors) from the University of London in Languages where he studied Classical Arabic, Classical Hebrew, Islamic History and Italian at the school of Oriental and African Studies and an M.A. in Comparative Philology (Linguistics). Further studies included a Licentiate in Philosophy (Magna cum Laude, First Class) at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy and Heythrop College, Oxford, United Kingdom. He also received a D.A. in Theater and Drama from Western Colorado University in July 1973 and an M.A. in Theology from St. Mark's College at the University of British Columbia in 1987. Post graduate studies included two years of Theology at the State University of Innsbruck, Austria and the Colegio Maximo in Ona, Burgos, Spain as well as three years in Law at the University of Malta, Valletta, Malta. Dr. Micallef was a Fellow of The Philosophical Society of England and Fellow of the College of Preceptors, England. Dr. Micallef was a Professor of Philosophy for much of his adult life and held various teaching positions in a number of Canadian and American Universities. He published widely in his chosen fields of philosophy and linguistics. Shortly before his death he published a collection of his poetry, entitled "No Destination: A Traveler's Way". He was fluent in English, Italian, Maltese, French, Latin and Spanish and had a working knowledge of Classical Greek, Classical Arabic, Classical Hebrew, German and Portuguese. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Malta from 1955 through 1959. Dr. Micallef leaves his wife Maria, his sisters, Margaret Micallef and Maria Ruggier and six children; Joseph, Margot, Gabriella, Rico, Vince and Ivana as well as eight very special grandchildren.
