John Michael Dunn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 8, 2024.
John Michael Dunn, a lifelong resident of Ypsilanti, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on June 26, 2024 in Cleveland, Tennessee.

He graduated from Ypsilanti High School and attended Washtenaw Community College and Eastern Michigan University. He served honorably as a munitions specialist for four years in the United States Army. He was a construction manager and tradesman for Dunn Construction, a family-owned business started by his father, John Dunn. He then went on to work as an independent craftsman and high-end finish carpenter.

John moved to Cleveland, Tennesse in 2024 to bring his autistic brother Ty closer to a large group of relatives from his father's side of the family. John continued to always love and care for his brother Ty, which he has done since his father, Mike Dunn, passed away several years ago.

John had a great love of music, golfing, boating, fishing, hiking, cooking, the outdoors, and his dog.

John was preceded in death by his parents John and Diane (Harmon) Dunn, grandparents Louis Douglas (L.D.) and Dorothy Harmon, grandparents John and Juanita Dunn, sister Patty Dunn, and his uncle Mark Harmon. They all lived in a close-knit community in Ypsilanti, Michigan for most of their lives.

His grandfather, LD Harmon, was a Naval officer who flew the Vought F4U Corsair in the Korean War from the aircraft carrier USS New York. He then founded Harmon Brothers Construction with his brother Lloyd Harmon, owned 2 Famous Recipe Fried Chicken restaurants, built and owned the Harmony House hotel, and met his wife Dorthy, an executive assistant, while they were both working at Kaiser-Frazer automobile company.

John is survived by his brother Ty Dunn, his aunt Denise (Harmon) Caliendo, and her 3 children. He is also survived by many loving family members in Cleveland, Tennessee, who lovingly welcomed John and Ty into their family.

He will be missed and remembered by all those who loved him.

Rest in Peace, John.

With love,

Aunt Denise

I always will remember him marching us somewhere in formation. He made me laugh quite often. From training in Gulfport to stationed in Hawaii. He will be missed.

John was my room mate and best friend in the Army in Hawaii. We reunited years later and then lost contact about 2010. I will miss my friend and brother in arms. Rest easy my friend until we meet again. I miss you and all your laughter and crazy big smile. To the good memories and the best of times. Cheers brother!

John was like a third older brother to me growing up. Lots of great memories, including a trip to Colorado that he made so much more fun for us! He lived down the street, so we spent a lot of time with him and his family. They were so kind and treated us like family. I will miss him!
